The place that moves me the most at the moment would have to be the courtyard in the Regis center for the arts. Im in a mid level ceramics throwing class and because ceramics is so demanding I spend a great deal of time in the 3d modeling studio, or clay rooms. Because of this I have come to think of it as a home away from home at times. The courtyard gives me a place to escape to when I feel fed up with my project or piece and lets me unwind. In the summer its nice and cool, and I can see all the new projects people are working on. In the winter its dead quite and I can sit by the outdoor kilns and not hear any of the machines or people working.

Besides being a outdoor working area it also serves as a storage space for unfinished or discarded projects. Sometimes amid all the wrecked sculptures and broken parts it feels like a tomb or cemetery. Like it is holy ground and I should view these works deemed unfit with respect.

I also have a slight emotional attachment to this space. I participated in a wood firing for the ceramics department. Because wood is used to stoke the kiln rather then gas, the wood must first be chopped then loaded approximately every 15 min for 48 hours to get the desired temperature. I took one of the night shifts and the friends I made that night I still consider friends now.

I think that’s the biggest attraction I have to this space. Amid all the clutter and confusion that is being a college student, or art student this place, that is at the center of it all is calm and relaxing year round.
