25 people died in fire of Latvian convalescent home

A fire that began because of a short circuit on the third floor of a convalescent home for elderly and disabled killed about 25 people early Friday in Latvia, Associated Press reported.

EuroNews service reported that up to 27 may have been killed in the fire.

Eighty people were rescued from the blaze with a death toll that is the highest for a fire in the country's history. Search continues for the bodies, or ones that may have escaped but are missing. Temperatures reached minus 13 Fahrenheit, and several sources of water were frozen that the firefighters had to drill holes in the ice to get water.
