Twin Cities Diversity in Practice Ambassador Program - Looking for Student Participants for Mentor Program

As Fall approaches, Twin Cities Diversity in Practice begins to think about the Ambassador Program, an informal and flexible mentoring program for local law students of color. The program kickoff will be from 4:30 - 7:30 p.m. on October 27, 2011 at Dorsey & Whitney LLP. Students will have the opportunity to meet their mentors as well as other students that are participating in the program at this time.

We believe that this program allows for students to gain insight from attorneys from law firms and corporate legal departments, which will be a valuable tool to help them succeed long term. The program runs from late October 2011 through May 2012. We had great involvement from all four law schools last year and hope to have continued success with students from each school again this year.

Sincerely,

For more information, please contact Matt Buechner with the Twin Cities Diversity in Practice program

Public Interest Law Conference at Emory 10/1/11

The 2011 Emory Public Interest Committee (EPIC) Conference will be an all-day event on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Emory Law School. The conference is well attended by students, legal practitioners, and faculty; and we hope to attract a large number of people interested in child law issues from the rest of Emory campus, the state of Georgia, and the national community.

This year's conference topic is Child Law: Past, Present, and Future. We want participants to learn about the unique plight of children, who cannot always advocate for themselves and who may not always have access to the legal system. You can learn more and register for the conference at http://www.law.emory.edu/academics/conferences/2011-epic-conference.html.

USAJobs will be inaccessible from October 6-12: Submit your completed applications prior to October 6

From the U.S. Department of State:

USAJobs.gov will transition to a new system October 6-12, 2011. During this time, the ability to conduct job searches, apply for jobs or receive application status updates will not be possible. Employers will not be able to post any new jobs. Even after the transition is complete, there may be sporadic, unannounced shutdowns.

For those applying for U.S. Department of State opportunities, we encourage you to complete your application prior to October 6, if possible, to reduce the possibility of system problems preventing an on-time submission. At this point, we do not anticipate a need for extending any application deadlines. However, we will monitor the situation and keep you informed of any changes.

Nominate a Law Student for the 2011 PSLN Pro Bono Publico Award

NALP is accepting nominations for the 2011 PSLawNet Pro Bono Publico Award, which recognizes the extraordinary contributions that law students make to under-served populations, the public interest community, and legal education by performing pro bono or public service work. The Pro Bono Publico Award is available to any second- or third-year law student at a PSLawNet subscriber school. The recipient will be honored during an Award Luncheon at NALP's Public Service Mini-Conference on Thursday, October 20 in Washington, DC. Law students are judged by the extracurricular commitment they have made to law-related public service projects or organizations; the quality of work they performed; and the impact of that work on the community, their fellow students, and the school. Nominations must be received by Thursday, September 15 at 5:00 pm Eastern time. Learn more and download a nomination form here

Making Government Service "Cool" Again: A discussion with John Berry, director of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management

Monday, September 12, 2011
5:30 to 7 p.m.
Cowles Auditorium
Humphrey School of Public Affairs
301 19th Avenue South, Minneapolis

John Berry is the federal government's chief "people person." As the director of the U. S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM), he is responsible for recruiting, hiring, and setting benefits policies for 1.9 million federal civilian employees.
Recently, President Obama challenged Berry to make government service "cool" again. Last December, the President issued an executive order directing the OPM to create a faster, easier pathway to public service for students and recent graduates. The proposed Pathways Programs would improve recruiting and provide for training, mentoring, and career development opportunities.
Come and learn more about government service and the federal career opportunities right here in the Twin Cities.

Ethics and Employment

From the National Association for Legal Career Professionals (NALP):

You Must Uphold the Highest Standards...

Lawyers as a profession are held to the highest moral and ethical standards. Those standards take effect as soon as you enter law school and should influence your behavior both in the classroom and in daily life.

While conduct in the classroom is of critical importance, so is your behavior as you undertake your job search. Every step of the search procedure, from writing your resume to accepting an offer and joining your new employer, should be governed by the same standards of behavior you would expect from a senior attorney.

Click here are guidelines that offer a general overview of ethical and moral expectations for students seeking jobs.
