Authenticated Public & Private Laws Released

Authenticated Public and Private Laws for the 110th Congress are now available on GPO Access as a searchable and browseable application in beta form at http://fdlpdev.gpo.gov/plaws/index.html.
nav_01.gif
GPO's Authentication initiative focuses on the primary objective of assuring users that the information made available by GPO is official and authentic and that trust relationships exist between all participants in electronic transactions. In furthering GPO's mission to provide permanent public access to authentic U.S. Government publications, GPO is working to afford users further assurance that files electronically disseminated through GPO Access are unchanged since GPO authenticated them and provide security for and safeguard Federal Government publications that fall within scope of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP).

The Public and Private Laws beta application provides authenticated Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files for the 110th Congress only.

Public and private laws within this application contain digitally signed and certified PDF files that contain GPO's Seal of authenticity. These files have been digitally signed and certified using Public Key Infrastructure
(PKI) technology. GPO is using PKI and Digital Signature technologies to verify the authenticity of the electronic U.S. Government documents that it disseminates through the FDLP. GPO's Seal of Authenticity notifies users that a document has not been altered since it was authenticated and disseminated by GPO.

Public and private laws are prepared and published by the Office of the Federal Register (OFR), National Archives and Records Administration. The database is updated when the publication of a slip law is authorized by OFR. Documents are available in ASCII text and as authenticated PDF files.

As part of testing GPO's authentication technology, we would like to collect valuable input and comments from all users on the beta Authenticated 110th Congress Public and Private Laws application. Input and comments provided will be used to provide the groundwork for the expectations and preferences of GPO's customers for future authentication technology and authenticated application releases. If you would like to provide feedback on this new GPO Access feature, a feedback form is available on the Authenticated Public and Private Laws Main Page at http://fdlpdev.gpo.gov/plaws/index.html.

If you have questions or comments, please use the GPO online help Service at: http://www.gpoaccess.gov/help.

Eyewitness Resources from Nat'l Archives

Nothing can be believed but what one sees, or has from an eye witness. --Thomas Jefferson, July 19, 1789

From the World Almanac blog:
" ...[T]he resources available on the National Archives website are pretty incredible. The problem with the site is the sheer volume of their resources—it would take forever to review them all. But the National Archives' multimedia "Eyewitness" exhibit helpfully whittles the collection down to a few dozen original letters, diaries, and recordings documenting eyewitness views on major crises at home and abroad—covering everything from General George Washington's fear of bioterrorism during the American Revolution to George H.W. Bush's firsthand account of Richard Nixon's last hours in the White House.

It's all pretty fascinating, especially the audio recordings, but be advised that some of the content is of a violent or upsetting nature. "

T.O.R.T. Report

The Law School's own T.O.R.T. is reported on in the May-June 2007 issue of "Minnesota: The Magazine of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association." An excerpt is below:
front_cov.MarMNcov3_copy

"Stage Fright
Standing center stage, Dr. Frankenlaw shrugged with wicked glee. “Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a heart in any law student, so I just put in an extra spleen instead!”

In Frankenlaw, an irreverent send-up of law school life, a mad professor sets out to create the perfect law student— using the body parts of inadequate students from Hamline, William Mitchell, and St. Thomas. The play was the latest incarnation of a tradition that started five years ago at the University of Minnesota Law School. Each year, more than 70 students get involved in T.O.R.T.—Theatre of the Relatively Talentless—penning the script, acting, operating the lights, and sweeping the stage afterward...."
