In the Chapter 12, the author suggests practical solutions striving for engaged and effective intercultural communication. He shows the critical perspectives and the social science perspectives as a guideline when we involve in intercultural communication. I find that the components of competence are particularly helpful. I make me rethink of my own intercultural experience, and would could i actually improve.
The components of competence include motivation, knowledge, attitudes, empathy, behaviors and skills. When I think of my previous intercultural experiences, competent compunction requires all five elements. All those five basic elements are able to ensure a functional and competent communication. However, the competence depends on individual's situation. Situations such as how other parties perceive, or the other parties' competence. therefore, the outcomes of the communication may vary.
