Week Seven - Short Run

A run similar to Tuesday's, except this time I left the office early enough to get in my full run, crossing at Hennepin Ave. before returning (instead of on the Stone Arch Bridge...the a-bridged version?...). I much prefer the run to Hennepin Ave., and should actually tweak the route a bit to get it up to an even 5.0...

Run stats:

  • 4.49 mi.
  • 37:24
  • 8:19 min./mi.
  • 528 calories
  • 159 avg. heart rate
  • iPod: Chutes Too Narrow, The Shins
  • Miles to date: 85.03

Week Seven - Short Run

Another run from the Rec Center, down University Ave., then under 35W and past Metalmatic to the Stone Arch Bridge. Across the river, past the Guthrie, under 35W again, and across the pedestrian bridge back to campus.

Run stats:

  • 3.75 mi.
  • 33:00
  • 8:51 min./mi.
  • 448 calories
  • Miles to date: 80.54

Week Six - Long Run

A nice and uneventful run, starting in fog at 10 am and with some partial sun later. I ran up to and around Lake Harriet first, and then went out along Minnehaha Creek to Cedar Ave. and then back home.

My iPod jammed around the half-way point, so the second half was quiet.

Run stats:

  • 11.87 mi.
  • 1:50:06
  • 9:16 min./mi.
  • 1511 calories
  • 156 avg. heart rate
  • iPod: You Could Have it So Much Better, Franz Ferdinand
  • Miles to date: 76.79

Week Six - Short Run

Another short run, though I consciously tried to keep a brisk pace. It's not too hard this time of year--- it's so liberating to run outdoors without wearing a bunch of gear, and just shorts and a shirt!

Run stats:

  • 3.64 mi.
  • 30:05
  • 8:16 min./mi.
  • 404 calories
  • 154 avg. heart rate
  • Miles to date: 64.92

Week Six - Short Run

This week I'm doing my short run first, just because I feel like running outside in the warm weather (57!). And I didn't bring my Polar monitor with me, so I can't really keep track of speed. It is nice to just 'run naked' without the data for a change. I usually like it and even rely on it, but it's not as critical on a short run.

Run stats:

  • 25 min.
  • Distance estimated to be ~3 mi.
  • Miles to date: 61.28

Week Five - Long Run

It was a cold run on the windy Eden Prairie tundra today. After brunch and a nap at Marilyn and Kent's, I decided to run the balance of my 13 miles today (after yesterday's 5k). My footpod battery went out at mile 8, but based on the time I think I finished all 10 miles.

Run stats:

  • 10 mi.
  • 1:31:02
  • 9:06 min./mi.
  • 1205 calories
  • 153 avg. heart rate
  • Miles to date: 58.28

Week Five - St. Patrick's Day 5k

A nice Saturday morning run with my friend Tim! Aside from a few patches of ice along the roadway and a cold start, it was a great run on the day I turn 36.

Run stats:

  • 3.27 mi.
  • 29:45 min.
  • 9:05 min./mi.
  • heart rate and cal. count was way off (heart monitor battery needs to be replaced?)
  • Miles to date: 48.28

Week Five - Speed Day

Nothing particularly special about today. Just a treadmill run, with a few sprinting episodes to start in on some real speed training. Speed training will take off more in earnest when it's warm outdoors and I can run on the track at Bierman Field.

For now, I intersperse minute runs at a 7:00 min/mi pace. (I occasionally ramp up to 6:00 min/mi...but not yet!)

Run stats:

  • 2.5 mi.
  • 20:00 min.
  • 9:23 min./mi.
  • 300 calories
  • Miles to date: 45.01

Week Four - Long Run

Today I resumed my weekly long run. It was supposed to be 12 miles, but because I didn't do one last week, I gave myself a 1 mile handicap.

I'm going to try to keep my long runs averaging 9 min./mi. Today went pretty well in light of that goal. Still under 10, so this makes a sub 5--- even a sub 4:30--- marathon a possibility this year.

Today was a warm and sunny, but messy, run. Interestingly, it reminded me of a similar run last year at this time, with the route being the same: Lakes Harriet, Calhoun, and of the Isles, and back. Lots of puddle-jumping, and the warm weather brought out a lot of people so the trails were crowded.

Run stats:

  • 11.07 mi.
  • 1:44:00
  • 9:23 min./mi.
  • 1321 calories
  • 148 avg. heart rate
  • Miles to date: 42.51

Week Four - Short Run

I probably should have ran outdoors today (it's 43 degrees right now!). But I decided to go quick and easy, so I dialed in a treadmill run instead. I didn't want to go taht far anyway because this week's schedule got a bit messed up, but I still want to run long tomorrow.

Workout stats:

  • 407 cal.
  • 30 min.
  • 3.3 mi.
  • iPod: Wait Wait..Don't Tell Me!, NPR (podcast)
  • Miles to date: 31.44

Week Four - Speed Workout

First, as you can see, no long run took place last week due to travel. Hopefully this does not set me back too much!

Second, yesterday's workout got postponed to today, then it was lightened, as it wasn't really that intense. I also won't be tracking stats for these days in the same way; for example, part of today was on a stationary bicycle, and my Polar watch only does running.

On the other hand, I think I'll start posting what I listen to on my iPod. Which I don't always use, but I often do when indoors.

Workout stats:

  • 450 cal.
  • 45 min.
  • iPod: Neon Bible, Arcade Fire; Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten, Deutsche Welle (podcast)

Week Three - Short Run

Another very hot day here in Key West. This time I didn't run into town, and instead headed along the main public beach. I ran into the wind, which felt nice, and had the wind at my back during my return.

Run stats:

  • 4.75 mi.
  • 43 min. 46 sec.
  • 9:13 min./mi.
  • 641 calories
  • 161 avg. heart rate
  • Miles to date: 28.14
