Back at It

bridge.jpg

I had a pretty painful muscle in my left calf since the marathon, but today things felt good enough for a short run (Monday just saw 20 min. on a stationary bike). It went well, and with the heat, I would have to say that shorter was also sweeter.

The photo shows progress on the new 35W bridge. I'm not exactly sure what is holding the new cast concrete segments up as they are attached and cantilevered over the river, but by the looks of it someone knows what they are doing! I'm impressed.

4:43:15

My third marathon started on a high note with a fairly cool morning, clear sky, and low humidity. Eric and I both felt great. My 4:30:00 goal seemed within reach!

The first several miles clipped by nicely. Mile splits between 9:30 and 10:00. Perfect.

But by mile 10, things took a turn. Eric took a second bathroom break (at the time I didn't know, but he wasn't feeling well). He told me not to wait so I kept on. That was the last I saw of him until after the race.

The middle third of the race was then quite challenging. I was worrying about Eric, and also feeling the effects of the relentless sun. I did a quick sprint across the half-marathon tracking mat to shave off a few seconds, turning in a half split of 2:11:01. (wow, had I only maintained that pace for the rest!)

From that point to about mile 19 or so, it was tough. The sun beat down, and I caved in and walked half-minute to full minute breaks in between water stations, in addition to over one minute walks at the stations themselves. By the time I crossed the 20 mile mat, I had lost 11 minutes of time.

The good news at that point, however, was that clouds finally blew in. A break from the sun! It was wonderful, and gave me a second wind. Which wasn't enough to make up any time, but was enough to keep me going a lot better. I walked less, kept moving, and didn't feel too bad. The last six miles were bearable if not slightly triumphant.

The sun ended up breaking through again around mile 24 or 25, though. A couple brief walking breaks, and then a few blocks of picking up the pace until the finish, and then I was done. I had lost another 12 minutes in the final 6 miles, but overall shaved off 13 minutes from last year's time. Not quite meeting my 4:30 goal, but a victory nonetheless.

Eric did finish (5:01:13), and I also note that this was his 20th marathon! And a fabulous time for someone who had been sick for over two weeks. His PR is *significantly* faster...

In Appreciation of Short Distances

Trying to stay positive about running 26.2 on Saturday. Even with consistent training and having done this twice before, it still seems rather insurmountable.

Which makes a mere 3.9 miles today seem so pleasant by comparison!

Run stats:

Training Has Officially Concluded

Granted, I have a few short miles to leisurely run this week, but it seems to me that the last long Saturday training run is the real conclusion.

A perfect end to a perfect training season. Superb weather with sun, a consistent breeze (just enough to cool, but not annoy), and a lakes route that is hard to beat. And I'm 50 miles ahead of last year's cumulative training miles; hopefully this means I'm 17% stronger as a result?

The long-range forecast for next Saturday's marathon is a high of 70, cloudy, and showers. That beats 85, sunny, and humid in every way possible— I'm looking forward to it.

Tapering

It seems that after running 22 miles last Saturday, 15 today should have felt easy.

Maybe I should know better!

I'm not sure if it was my tiring week, my lack of enthusiasm for this run, my missing coach (Eric was sick), or the warm and humid morning. I hope the sun alone wasn't responsible; I do fear another repeat of tropical conditions at Grandma's. I'm just not sure I could handle a third hot one!

Please, weather gods, toss me a cool and overcast day on June 21!

Cool and Rainy

It's interesting how powerful running can be, and how it changes the way you see things. For example, I sometimes come up with my best ideas or solutions to problems as I run (this is one of the reasons why I can so easily justify running during my work day).

It also sets some things into proper context. Cool and rainy isn't everyone's idea of a great day outdoors, but to a distance runner it's wonderful.
