The Inevitable Post-Mortem

I've had a whole week now to mull over the results of this year's election season. For a few days now I've been taking a break from the news media and the blogs, avoiding another view of the red sea that covers the map of the nation. It's alienating to realize that so much of the country has joined Jesusland.

Like many voters, you could say the biggest factor for me in the election was moral values. I am particularly disturbed by the 11 states that voted to ban gay marriage, and in some cases, even civil unions. I honestly don't understand why people who don't want to marry someone of the same sex feel threatened by those who do. I don't understand why they think it will affect them. It just seems so spiteful and uneccessary to make laws and even constitutional changes preventing adults who love each other from forming a union. I don't understand what that kind of behavior has to do with "supporting family values."

There are a few small comforts to take in all this, however. I am grateful that Kerry conceded and that we have thus far avoided getting bogged down in law-suits. I am grateful that Minnesota has not been inundated by the scarlet tide. Most of all, I'm glad it's over -- for now. Maybe by 2008, we'll have a Moses to part the waters of the red sea and lead us to the promised land.
