The Decline of Car Culture

Nate Silver on Auto Industry Statistics in Esquire.

Disentangling the long-term trend, gas prices, and the recession is tricky. Only time well tell whether this is permanent.

(The graph on the linked page is annoying because of its pseudo-3D nature, flat line graphs please with no shadows).

I wish they would recreate that graph in 2 boring dimensions.

I wish it also had source information. Any idea on that? Thanks !

:FHWA has data on VMT in its highway statistics series. Energy Information Agency has data on gas prices. I assume GDP comes from Dept. of Commerce somewhere, should turnup fairly quickly in a google search. You could always email Nate Silver -- dml
