If theatre is to survive, more people have to show up. Somehow the theatre has to create an environment and a content that can compete with the other major forms of live entertainment - music, sports, conversation in a bar. This may be tricky.
Should theatre compete with television and film? I don't think so. I think that what theatre does well cannot be done by these forms, and the experience is not sought after for the same reasons.
