Only at the U!

Mix and match courses to earn multiple educational leadership credentials for the same cost as one… Only at the University of Minnesota!

It’s true! In the time it takes you to meet the State of Minnesota’s 60 semester credit requirement for administrative licensure, you can earn multiple licenses, certificates, and degrees.

Click here to see an example of how this could work for you. In the sample column our student will earn a master's in education leadership (M.Ed), PK-12 principal and school superintendent licenses, a certificate in PK-12 administration, a certificate in professional development, and an education specialist (Ed.S.) degree—all within the requisite 60 credits specified in MN Rule 3512 for earning either a K-12 principal, director of special education, or superintendent’s license. (The director of community education is also available but fewer credits are required by the State.)

We’ve listed the options for degrees, licenses, and certificates along the horizontal header. In the vertical columns under the headers are the required courses for that particular credential. Required courses are signified with an R, while courses that are options are distinguished by an O. When reading across each row, you can see which courses fulfill requirements in multiple credentials. You need to take those courses, except for 5396 Field Experience, only once. (Field experience must be taken once for each license.)

To see how many credits you’ll need to complete all the credentials you want, select the courses you plan to take and place their credit value at the end of each row. Add the column to determine if you will meet the 60 credits needed for licensure. If the total is less than 60, consider an additional credential or think about electives that will enhance your program.

You may also apply for admission to the U after completing your master’s degree at another accredited college or university. In that case, with 30 semester transfer credits and 30 semester credits earned at the University of Minnesota from requisite courses, you could earn two licenses without exceeding the 60 credit minimum required for administrative licensure.

We’d love to discuss how you can make the most of your academic pursuits! For more information contact Dr. Gloria Kumagai, program coordinator,
