for my final project i decided to make a animation in photoshop. I really like making animations and i thought this would be a good idea for my final project. i went back to the themes in all my other art work, which deals with enviromaental issues affecting animals. I then decied to use a hedgehog as my main character in the story. I have a pet hedgehog named noodle and she is awesome so i really wanted to incorperate her into this project some how.

As for the story she first wakes up in the forest where she lives, and then go out to look at the view from her favorite spot on the hill when buildings begin to pop up all over. she then gets overwhelmed and leaves but now her home is a city, so she walks up to a building with a tv in it and sees a counting cartoon with hedgehogs (ok that was the origianl idea for the project but once it was done i felt it was not enough)... in it so there is a moment of happiness for the hog but then as she continues on she sees smoke and sludge and cars... so she finally gets tired and falls asleep by a tree and dreams of her old home...and its over :)

as for the sound i used garage band, I think it fits ok, but I have no music abilitys so making the sound was a lot harder than just creating the cartoon.

overall i'm happy with how it turned out

Carl Fudge

Carl Fudge was born in London and has lived in New York City for ten years. He uses digital technology as a step in his print, painting and drawing process. The picture in the Digital Art book is of a print called Rhapsody Spray I. I thought it was really interesting when I first saw it in the text. It has such a interesting color palette. On further inspection I began reading about the artist and I found out that the print I thought was this really cool design was actually a digitally manipulated scanned image of the Japanese anime cartoon Sailor Moon. I then looked closer and realized that was absoultly correct, this relization made me like this artist even more. If he can take a simple illustration and manipulate it into a very interesting piece of art then, that I feel is a great way to use digital technology. I also like that he uses the computer for his designs but the way he presents the final product is much more tradional such as a print.

In all his work he is intersecting some of the newest and oldest printmaking technologies. Many of Fudge's prints are complex digital reworkings of Japanese 17th century woodcuts and contemporary popular images. I really enjoyed reading about his other works as well because if you look close enough a lot of his images are regonizable subjects or old prints. His Spray series that was featured in the book is quite intersting as a whole. he took different color palettes to change the different manipulations of each print.

I think I was drawn to his work because I really love animation and I also like complex patterns when it comes to digital art. I think it is so interesting that he can take an image and with a computer he can make it his own. I think for him it was probably a very smart way to work. he does not have to come up with his original starting point because it is already made for him. He gets to do all the fun stuff with manipulation and personally I think that could be really fun. I also like the fact that he will screen print his work rather than using a printer. I think that element to his work is very unique and quite special when it comes to digital art.

self portrait

]]> this is my first project which was a self portrait. I decided to make myself look like a page in a coloring book. I used a stamp filter for my body and then drawed all the other objects with black pen and scanned them in. When I had everything in place I used the paint bucket to fill in the colors. I purposely left out parts that remained white, so the concept of the coloring book would show through. overall I'm pleased with the outcome.

the mysteries

]]> For this project I worked with Jessie and Martin on a simple short annimation on the architectural design. Jessie and I each took actual pictures of places at elusies and traced over them secton by section. I scanned in each part seperatley so once they were fit together the annimation would look like it is building up onto one another. Martin then took all of our imagery and put it together with some titles and music to make the final project.

I had an ok time with this project. at first it did seem really confusing at what we were suppose to be doing but after we came to a decison on what we were going to do it did not seem as bad. I wish our first ideas would have worked out because our original plan with getting actual video footage of the site would have been really neat. yet our backup idea i feel is a cute little piece that may work well in the final dvd.

ugly duckling

]]> for my storyboard project i decided to take the fairytale of the ugly duckling and transform it with a modern day twist. It begins with the duck being born in an inner city factory that breeds ducks for food. He is sad because nobody tags him and he gets kicked out. He then comes to a cat who is also homeless and they live together until he sees a swan flying by and becomes curious. he then relizes that he himself id a swan and he lives happily ever after.

I had a pretty good time doing this project. I have always been fasinated with annimation and story boards, so i was very excited to get to deal with this kind of medium. I drew all the characters and objects on paper, and scanned them in. All the coloring was done in the computer along with some digital manipulation.

the self portrait project as very interesting and fun to do. Everyone had so many unique ideas. A few of my favorites from this class were Jodies's, Taryn's and Lisa's. I liked the way that jodie had herself painted and the reverse imagery. I also liked the pen and ink drawing that was overlayed on top of the portrait. Taryn had a great concept with keeping it look like she was trapped in a box. There was some great perspective usage and I enjoyed her color choices. Finally Lisa's was so dark and mysterious which I really enjoyed. I liked that she used her own photography and the trees. As for mine, I chose to make it look like a coloring book which I felt represented me and my style of art.

]]> the story project was a bit more of a challenge than the previous but overall I enjoyed doing it. I chose to tell the story of the "Ugly Duckling" in a more modern way. The project is made of ten digital prints which when put together help tell the story. Some of my class favorites were Jessie's, Blia's, and Martin's. I really enjoyed Jessie's story of the bean, coal, and straw. I liked how colorful and eratic her imagery was. as for Blia's her drawings were excellent and very skilled for being digital I thought the whole thing was very beautiful. Finally Martin's had a very clean and simple way of telling his myth. I liked th consistent feel of clip art within his piece and I also liked how he turned it into a movie.
