August 2008 Archives

Since Google Books can get full-text scanned books online...why not the library? The library recently purchased the entire Springer book collection electronically. The Springer e-book collection includes:

  • all books printed since 2005-
  • 23 book series going back to 1997 (such as Springer Series in Optical Sciences and Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics)
  • 14 titles with complete online archives going back to volume 1, issue 1 such as:
    Advances in Polymer Science
    Advances in Solid State Physics
    Lecture Notes in Computer Science
    Lecture Notes in Mathematics
    Lecture Notes in Physics
    Springer Tracts in Modern Physics
    Topics in Applied Physics

Only half of the collection is loaded into the library system so far and the rest are being added daily. The e-book collection will expand as new titles become available and is projected to grow by the thousands each year! Currently, there are over 600 Physics and Astronomy titles. For a complete list of titles to-date download the excel spreadsheet.

Furthermore, Springer is going to a “born digital production model with 80-100% of books projected to be “born digital? by the end of 2008." What this means for the library is that we will stop purchasing the print version of each Springer title (since this would duplicate what is available electronically) and instead upload the url's into the library catalog for instant access. If there are Springer titles that you feel must remain in print here in the library, please let me know!

Fall Course Reserves

Just a friendly reminder that the library is accepting items to be placed on reserve for the fall semester. I encourage you to add any textbooks, solutions manuals, or additional reading to our reserve collection. We are happy to add both library copies (search MNCAT to see if you textbook is already in Walter) or personal copies. Walter is happy to welcome a new staff member to our circulation staff, Priscilla Pope who handles the Sci/Eng Reserve Collection. Please contact her with your course materials (Walter Library Circulation desk, 612-626-9567, p-pope@umn.edu).

Uploading electronic materials is easy too. Find out how to provide secure, online access to lecture notes, presentation slides, and practice exams at http://www.lib.umn.edu/site/eres.phtml.

New Books for June (e-books!)

Note: The library has significantly increased its collection of electronic books by purchasing all of Springer's ebooks from 2005 to the present. There were so many new ebooks this month that it is not practical to include all of them, so the Springer titles in this list represent only a sampling. You can find over 5000 Springer ebooks in our catalog. You can see the full package at www.springerlink.com

Excerpts from my August 2008 quarterly "Web Reviews" Column:
"Don't be Evil:" Google Tools Libraries can Use (August 2008). SciTech News. 62 (3), p32-35.

With Google, you already search the web, share photos/movies/music, map directions and discover new things...but there are some tools you may have missed. This web search engine is on a mission to "organize the world's information and make it universally accessible." So let's explore the new tools and technology that pair Google-efficient tools with library-quality results to weave together a rich information web that goes beyond just the World Wide Web. We'll look at tools located in the “More? tab at the top of every Google search page, such as, Google Docs, RSS Reader, Google Scholar, and iGoogle Research Gadgets that will help you access, evaluate, and share information in an easy collaborate environment.
