Springer Books Go Electronic, 2005-onward

Since Google Books can get full-text scanned books online...why not the library? The library recently purchased the entire Springer book collection electronically. The Springer e-book collection includes:

  • all books printed since 2005-
  • 23 book series going back to 1997 (such as Springer Series in Optical Sciences and Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics)
  • 14 titles with complete online archives going back to volume 1, issue 1 such as:
    Advances in Polymer Science
    Advances in Solid State Physics
    Lecture Notes in Computer Science
    Lecture Notes in Mathematics
    Lecture Notes in Physics
    Springer Tracts in Modern Physics
    Topics in Applied Physics

Only half of the collection is loaded into the library system so far and the rest are being added daily. The e-book collection will expand as new titles become available and is projected to grow by the thousands each year! Currently, there are over 600 Physics and Astronomy titles. For a complete list of titles to-date download the excel spreadsheet.

Furthermore, Springer is going to a “born digital production model with 80-100% of books projected to be “born digital by the end of 2008." What this means for the library is that we will stop purchasing the print version of each Springer title (since this would duplicate what is available electronically) and instead upload the url's into the library catalog for instant access. If there are Springer titles that you feel must remain in print here in the library, please let me know!
