Browse the last 20 Years of Physics

Latest issue of IOP's Physics World highlights the ways in which Physics has changed in the last 20 years. Great cover!

To read this issue, and many other popular magazines in print, visit the library and browse the current journal reading room on the second floor of Walter room 204. They are ordered by call number and Physics World is available at QC1 .P66.

Like other popular magazines, the older issues are available through the library's electronic subscription, in this case there is only a few months lag in the Physics World archive (1988-three months ago).

Scholarly Communication at the U

In case you missed it, the 2008 Open Access day was October 14th and the library's Scholarly Communications office celebrated with a successful awareness campaign. Take a look at their web site for all the highlights http://www.lib.umn.edu/scholcom/openaccessday.phtml

Cool OA facts:

  • More than 300 University of Minnesota researchers have published their research in open-access journals since 2003.
  • U researchers get a 10-15% discount when publishing in open-access journals from Public Library of Science (PLoS), BioMed Central, and Nucleic Acids Research, thanks to subscriptions by the U Libraries.
  • The University of Minnesota Press has just released Digitize This Book! The Politics of New Media, or Why We Need Open Access Now by Gary Hall, a pioneer in open access publishing in the humanities.
  • NIH-funded U researchers can get help from the U Libraries and SPA in meeting NIH’s open-access requirement.

New for 2010, courses that meet the College of Liberal Education (CLE) requirements must include a brief paragraph (300 characters) of how each course meets one or more of the Student Learning Outcomes (SLO). As the deadline for re-certification approaches the libraries are happy to provide an instructor guide on "Improving Student Research" either in print (request) or pdf download. The booklet contains specific examples of ways to address the new CLE requirements of the university's Student Learning Outcomes.
