Creating a Data Management Plan for Your Grant Application
In January 2011, the National Science Foundation (NSF) will begin requiring a data management plan will all new grant proposals. This workshop, geared toward graduate students, faculty and researchers, will provide and overview of the questions to consider when creating a data management plan with a focus on data preservation issues and tools for sharing your data, like subject-based repositories. Better Data Searching
The only thing harder than finding a relevant dataset the first time is finding it again the second time. This session will demonstrate methods for getting better results in Google searches, recommend methods and tools for keeping track of what you have found and show how the Internet Archive can help you find data that seems to have disappeared. We'll also have plenty of time for discussing specific sources in the attendees research areas and any other data questions attendees may have.

Gauging Impact: How to Determine Impact Factors and What They Really Tell You

Can I Use That? Fair Use in Everyday Life
Fair use is a vital part of copyright law. Quotation, criticism, review, collage, parody - all involve aspects of fair use. Participants in this workshop for faculty and instructors will develop an understanding of the complexities of fair use, and recognize situations where it might apply. We'll also look at other situations where copyright answers may be more straightforward. Participants will explore fair use concepts using examples from visual arts, music, and video, as well as academic research and writing. Expect to think hard, discuss a little, and have fun! No direct legal advice will be provided; this workshop is informational in nature. Satisfies RCR continuing education awareness/discussion requirements.
