The library has purchased a one-year subscription to the online content of the SPIE. To gain access, select from the e-journal list on the the library website or use this direct proxy link: http://www.lib.umn.edu/get/1658

The SPIE Digital Library is the most extensive resource available on optics and photonics, providing unprecedented access to more than 275,000 technical papers from SPIE Journals and Conference Proceedings from 1990 to the present. More than
17,000 new research papers are added annually. (Note that SPIE now includes some eBooks, but they're not included in our subscription.)

Since we're treating this subscription as a "trial" for this year, I'd appreciate any feedback you have on this subscription.

The library is interested in obtaining your extra copies of AIP conference proceedings. This is a series that we purchase on a case-by-case basis at a considerable cost ($150-$450 per volume). Therefore, to avoid gaps in the collection and archive your work, please consider gifting any additional copies of AIP published proceedings to the library, if not previously owned (check http://MNCat.lib.umn.edu before mailing the item).

Here are some examples of recent 2008 proceedings that the library is seeking:

  • $89 PHYSICS EDUCATION RESEARCH CONFERENCE
  • $165 SMART DEVICES: MODELING OF MATERIAL SYSTEMS: An International Workshop;
  • $399 THE XV INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS ON RHEOLOGY: The Society of Rheology 80th Annual Meeting

The library recently purchased these proceedings:
$270 FIRST STARS III: First Stars II Conference
$218 ORIGIN OF MATTER AND EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES: The 10th International Symposium
$199 THE EVOLUTION OF GALAXIES THROUGH THE NEUTRAL HYDROGEN WINDOW
$209 PARTICLE ACCELERATION AND TRANSPORT IN THE HELIOSPHERE AND BEYOND: 7th Annual International Astrophysics Conference

New Books for July and August

Catch up on summer reading? We’ve updated our new books list to include the titles that we received in July and August. Follow the links to peruse our newest Physics and Astronomy titles.

View a list of all the new books that have come into the Science and Engineering Library.

If you have an idea for a book that you’d like to see purchased or a topic that you would like to suggest that I purchase on, I’m be happy to hear your thoughts. Email me.

Since Google Books can get full-text scanned books online...why not the library? The library recently purchased the entire Springer book collection electronically. The Springer e-book collection includes:

  • all books printed since 2005-
  • 23 book series going back to 1997 (such as Springer Series in Optical Sciences and Springer Tracts in Advanced Robotics)
  • 14 titles with complete online archives going back to volume 1, issue 1 such as:
    Advances in Polymer Science
    Advances in Solid State Physics
    Lecture Notes in Computer Science
    Lecture Notes in Mathematics
    Lecture Notes in Physics
    Springer Tracts in Modern Physics
    Topics in Applied Physics

Only half of the collection is loaded into the library system so far and the rest are being added daily. The e-book collection will expand as new titles become available and is projected to grow by the thousands each year! Currently, there are over 600 Physics and Astronomy titles. For a complete list of titles to-date download the excel spreadsheet.

Furthermore, Springer is going to a “born digital production model with 80-100% of books projected to be “born digital? by the end of 2008." What this means for the library is that we will stop purchasing the print version of each Springer title (since this would duplicate what is available electronically) and instead upload the url's into the library catalog for instant access. If there are Springer titles that you feel must remain in print here in the library, please let me know!

New Books for June (e-books!)

Note: The library has significantly increased its collection of electronic books by purchasing all of Springer's ebooks from 2005 to the present. There were so many new ebooks this month that it is not practical to include all of them, so the Springer titles in this list represent only a sampling. You can find over 5000 Springer ebooks in our catalog. You can see the full package at www.springerlink.com

Need a book?

If you have suggestions of books the Science and Engineering Library should buy, this is a particularly good time to let me know. For the fifth year, the IT Endowed Library Fund is providing money for purchase of library books in all subjects covered by IT, which should provide about 20 new books in physics and astronomy. To be included in this project, I'll need your suggestions by April 18, but please feel free at any time to send me recommendations of books you think the library should have.

FYI, the IT Endowed Library Fund has provided over 400 books for the Science & Engineering Library and the Math Library in the past 4 years.
