The National Library of Medicine (NLM) invites applications for the Outreach Librarian in the National Network of Libraries of Medicine (NN/LM) National Network Office in the Division of Library Operations.

This position has primary responsibility for outreach activities coordinated by the NN/LM National Network Office and serves as the liaison between the NN/LM Regional Medical Libraries and the NLM concerning outreach to health professionals and the public health workforce. The position serves as an advisor on project parameters and methods, monitors outreach activities in the Regions, initiates new outreach initiatives,and leads efforts to evaluate ongoing outreach projects to identify lessons learned and effective practices.

The position also serves as a key participant in the development and enhancement of NLM and NN/LM systems to support the tracking of the NN/LM outreach activities. The NN/LM National Network Office is responsible for coordinating the NN/LM through 8 Regional Medical Libraries. The NN/LM works to provide timely, convenient access to biomedical and health information resources for U.S. health professionals, researchers, educators and the general public. The NN/LM is the core component of NLM's outreach program and its efforts to reduce health disparities and improve health information literacy.

The successful candidate will have proven ability of professionally accepted techniques and methods for providing health information for health professionals and the public health workforce.

NLM is located on the campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, just a short Metro ride from Washington D.C. Bethesda has a thriving restaurant and retail hub just a short walk from NLM.

From the GMR: Online Search Clinic on Finding Chemicals and Drugs in PubMed

Search Clinic: Chemicals & Drugs in PubMed®

Learn how to find articles about a chemical or drug of interest. The U.S. National Library of Medicine is hosting a 45-minute online clinic on how the NLM MeSH vocabulary is used to describe substance concepts and how to search PubMed for relevant articles.

The clinic is designed for librarians and other information specialists with little to moderate experience in searching for articles about chemicals or drugs in PubMed. Participants are expected to have a basic understanding of how to search PubMed.

The clinic is limited to 150 attendees, so please register early.

From the GMR: Personnel Change (Bryan Vogh)

Network members,

As part of an internal adjustment at UIC, Bryan Vogh will be working out of the main campus library for the next 8-10 months where he will be focusing his attention on developing Web-based tutorials. We hope these tutorials will be useful to Network members as well as to our UIC customers.

The responsibilities of the Technology Coordinator position have been redistributed to other GMR Coordinators and we will be posting the Technology Coordinator position within the next few months.

The National Network of Libraries of Medicine Greater Midwest Region (NN/LM GMR) is seeking a knowledgeable, outgoing, energetic librarian to fill the Consumer Health Coordinator position for the ten-state region.

RESPONSIBILITIES: This position is responsible for coordinating the consumer health program within the Greater Midwest Region, including developing instructional materials, training librarians to provide consumer health information services, and promoting NLM’s consumer health resources, including the MedlinePlus database and MedlinePlus Go Local initiatives. The Coordinator works with representatives from public libraries, health science libraries, and community-based organizations to promote membership in the NN/LM and to offer consumer health workshops.

The Coordinator serves as a liaison to network members who apply for consumer health subcontracts or who are interested in forming partnerships with community-based organizations for the purpose of improving public
access to quality health information. The Coordinator also works with other NN/LM GMR staff to train librarians and health professionals on other Internet resources and new NLM systems; presents and exhibits at professional librarians’ and health professionals’ meetings; provides referrals and information about NLM services and products to librarians, consumers and health professionals; and contributes to the GMR’s blog and other regional and state publications.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s degree in Library Sciences from an ALA accredited program; two to five years library experience, preferably in a health sciences library. Experience with NLM databases and products;
experience with providing consumer health information services; teaching/training experience; experience with computers and developing web resources; excellent written and oral communications skills; willingness to travel; and ability to transport and set up exhibit material.

SALARY/CONTRACT: Salary commensurate with experience; professional academic staff appointments in the UIC Library begin at $45,000; twelve month appointment with 24 days vacation; 12 days annual sick leave with
additional disability benefits; 11 paid holidays; paid medical insurance (contribution based on annual salary; coverage for dependents may be purchased); two dental plans available; life insurance paid for by the State; participation in one of the retirement options of the State Universities Retirement System compulsory (8% of salary is withheld and is tax exempt until withdrawal); no Social Security coverage but Medicare payment required; physical examination at University Health Service is required upon appointment.

From the GMR: Stipends to attend American Public Health Association annual meeting in DC (Nov 3-7)

Interested in Politics, Policy and Public Health?

They're the theme of the 2007 American Public Health Association annual meeting in Washington, DC November 3-7.

The Grace and Harold Sewell Memorial Fund, Inc. is offering stipends to librarians and other information professionals to help cover the costs of their attending and/or participating in this meeting. Successful
applicants from the greater Washington DC area will receive a stipend of $650. Successful applicants from outside greater Washington will receive $1,000. Though significant, these amounts will NOT cover all costs, so stipend recipients will need to find additional monies to cover remaining costs.

Completed applications are due July 30, 2007--about 3 weeks from today. To apply, read and complete the application form attached or download the Word application form at http://depts.washington.edu/hswork/mla/stipend/mla-crc-call-2007.doc.
