ACRL Health Science Interest Group @ ALA
Dear ACRL IGHS Member,
I am writing to introduce myself and let you know about our listserv and our upcoming events. Unfortunately I didn't have access to our member list until now, so I apologize for not sending this out earlier to those who joined earlier this year. My name is Carissa Tomlinson and I started this group a little over a year ago. I currently am the liaison for nursing, gerontology, and health sciences at Towson University outside Baltimore. I started this group because while I was active in ACRL and saw myself very much as an academic librarian, there was no health science presence within the organization. Our group's charge is:
The Health Science Interest Group works to provide an opportunity for academic librarians with health sciences responsibilities to have a place in ACRL to network, share information, ask questions, and work on special projects and programs relevant to the academic health sciences. The group also works to promote interest in the health sciences to potential and current academic librarians and to improve information literacy specifically in the area of the health sciences.
Our group has grown quite a bit in the last year. We now have over 200 official members and many more who subscribe to our listserv (Google Group). We also have developed three working groups that have worked throughout the year on various group related projects. I've also had quite a bit of help from the group's elected vice-chair, Dominique Turnbow. Dominique is currently the Undergraduate Services Librarian at the UC San Diego Biomedical Library. After this summer's ALA Annual Conference, Dominique will be taking over as chair and I will continue to serve the group as past-chair. At this time, we will also be electing a new vice-chair for the 2010-2011 year.
Many of you may already subscribe to our listserv, our primary communication device, but if not, please join us at: http://groups.google.com/group/acrl-health-science-interest-group. I'm also excited to announce that we have three upcoming events at ALA Annual in DC.
