Director of the Shiffman Medical Library
Wayne State University is seeking a dynamic librarian with a commitment to excellence in customer service and a record of successful leadership who wishes to work in a fast-paced environment where planning, assessment, innovation, staff development and service are emphasized. Reporting to the Dean, University Library System, and working together with the other members of the Library Leadership team, the Director of the Shiffman Medical Library will provide leadership and direction for service delivery, building of faculty and student relationships, and developing collections.
Essential Responsibilities: The Director of the Shiffman Medical Library is responsible for planning and managing the daily operations of the library, including organizing and leading a staff of 4 librarians and 12 support staff. The Director oversees management and development of a collection which includes approximately 148,000 journal volumes, 71,000 books and access to an outstanding array of electronic resources. The Director also oversees the Pharmacy & Health Sciences Learning Resource Center located at the Applebaum College. The Director is responsible for addressing the needs of the Medical School and for maintaining and fostering positive relationships between the medical library and its constituents, including students, faculty, alumni, and community members. The Medical Library Director administrative appointment resides in the Library System and reports to the Dean of the Library System. The Director serves as a member of the Collections and Operations Team and works collaboratively with other directors in the library system to determine policy and recommend strategies on system-wide issues.
Minimum Qualification: Qualified candidates must have an MLS degree from an ALA accredited institution, relevant experience in administering an academic medical library and a strong commitment to excellent public service. A record of leadership and scholarship is also required.
The Director is an essential resource for meeting the research, teaching and scholarship needs of a diverse faculty and student body and should have outstanding knowledge of how to fill these needs. The Director must have a strong understanding of how emerging technologies can be applied to the research and support mission of the Shiffman Medical Library.

The Shiffman Medical Library: The Shiffman Medical Library supports the research, education and clinical and public health care information needs for the university and major hospitals within the Detroit Medical Center. The library maintains access to all major health sciences, bio-scientific and consumer health databases; a core collection of journals dating to the mid-19th century; and books in print and electronically.
The Wayne State University School of Medicine: Founded in 1869 as the Detroit Medical College, the WSU School of Medicine was the first established school of what would eventually become Wayne State University. As Detroit's only medical school, the mission of the WSU School of Medicine is to raise the health status of the community and improve the delivery of health care to the surrounding area through scientific advancement, clinical service and the training of practicing physicians in the region. The WSU School of Medicine is composed of over 750 clinical and nearly 200 basic science faculty members. At WSU, more than 1200 medical students, 900 physicians-in-training and 400 basic science graduate students make up the largest medical school on one campus in the country. In partnership with the several health systems, the WSU School of Medicine has emerged today as one of the nation's leading academic medical centers, hosting one of the largest graduate medical education programs in the United States with some 900 residents and fellows. Long regarded as a premier site for clinical training, the WSU School of Medicine has also established itself as a major center for research. Research initiatives by medical school faculty have risen to a base of over $137 million. The School has six dedicated research laboratory buildings located on the medical campus. Although the school's faculty are comprised of experts in almost all medical fields, the institution houses centers of excellence in women's and children's health, cancer, neuroscience and population studies.
