Science Reference Librarian - Biomedical Specialist

The University of Chicago Library

Under the direction of the Co-Director (Public Services) for the Science Libraries Division, this position serves as a member of the Crerar Library reference team, providing daily reference services to both biomedical and physical sciences users, including responding to reference queries in person, by email, phone and via instant messaging. Participates in instruction and outreach services for the sciences and broader library system, with an emphasis on bioinformatics. Develops and participates in science communication activities including print and web publications, web page development, and exhibitions. Responsible for print and digital collection development activities, coordinating with other science subject bibliographers on collection decisions as appropriate. Creates a role for the Library in bioinformatics at the University, including identifying faculty and staff involved in bioinformatics, determining their needs and incorporating the Library into their research and teaching.

Education: A graduate library degree from an ALA-accredited library school and an undergraduate degree in the biological sciences are required. A graduate degree in the biological sciences is strongly preferred.

Experience Required: 2-3 years related experience in an academic library; demonstrated knowledge of online databases and resources in the biological sciences; demonstrated knowledge of current and developing information technologies. Preferred: Database searching experience, including the bioinformatics resources and databases available from the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) is strongly preferred; knowledge of scientific statistical methodologies an asset.

Skills Required: Demonstrated ability to use office productivity software (e.g. MS Office); demonstrated experience with web authoring tools; demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully and effectively, and work well with colleagues and library patrons, individually and in groups; demonstrated ability to perform complex problem-solving and decision-making; demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects; demonstrated strong commitment to professional development. Preferred: Reading knowledge of either French or German.
