Job Description
LIBRARY DIRECTOR
LEVEL: Exempt
SALARY: $65,000 - $72,000

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS


  • Administers library services in accordance with the policies and objectives of the Illinois College of Optometry

  • Provides library selection, acquisition, circulation, reference, and technical services to faculty, students, and to the college administration, especially in the area of vision science

  • Provides instruction both to groups and individuals on research methods and on how to evaluate and access information resources and literature, especially related to optometry

  • Develops and supervises operational policies and procedures; initiates planning processes; and implements plans as approved and funded

  • Develops annual budget recommendations for the library

  • Administers the approved budgets of the library

  • Interviews, supervises and evaluates employees of the library

  • Works with computers, programs, and programmers to support library services to faculty, students, and to the college administration

  • Provides leadership in developing library programs, services and activities which meet instructional needs

  • Supports the administration in providing information resources needed for the College's mission

  • Assesses utilization of the library and its programs to improve use of facilities and services and conducts research on how to more effectively provide library services

  • Establishes and maintains cooperative working relationships for faculty and students with other libraries

  • Serves as webmaster for the library and for VisionCite.com

  • Promotes the library to the Illinois College of Optometry community, including the students, faculty and alumni via the websites, social media, newsletters, attendance at events and meetings, and other forms of communication

  • As a member of the faculty, serves on College committees, and fulfills other faculty responsibilities such as contributing to scholarship, and in service to the profession, community and the College

  • Negotiates with publishers, consortia, and other providers of library resources to purchase needed materials and services

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Reports the activities and needs of the library to appropriate personnel
  • Ability to do essential functions of the employees of the library
  • Supports the College's use of the Turning Point response system
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs/Dean
  • Represent the Illinois College of Optometry to library consortia and organizations
  • Markets and sells access to VisionCite to other institutions and individual users

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • MA or MS degree in Library Science, Information Science, or Instructional Technology.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability within a library or learning resources program
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Three to five years of increasing responsibility in supervision and management positions
  • Good analytical skills
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Effective human relations skills
  • Knowledge of Library Science
  • Ability to work with committees and in administrative teams
  • Utilization of library information systems; some systems knowledge preferred
  • Experience with basic web design and maintenance
  • Knowledge of medical library resources
  • Ability to use microcomputers and install programs and upgrades
  • Knowledge of teaching skills
