The University of Chicago Library invites applications for the position of Biomedical Librarian.
The John Crerar Library provides specialized reference, instructional, and outreach services to faculty, clinicians, students, and staff in the biomedical and physical sciences at the University of Chicago. The Biological Sciences Division (BSD) is home to the University's biomedical community, which includes 21 departments, 13 interdisciplinary committees, 26 centers and institutes, the Collegiate Division, the Pritzker School of Medicine, and the University of Chicago Medical Center (UCMC). The BSD offers 19 PhD-granting programs, which are grouped into four broad clusters: Biomedical Sciences, Darwinian Sciences, Molecular Biosciences and Neuroscience. The UCMC, in partnership with the BSD, offers 20 accredited residency programs and 38 accredited fellowship programs. The Physical Sciences Division (PSD) is home to the University's physical sciences community, which includes 7 departments, 5 institutes, 2 national laboratories, 7 research centers. The PSD offers 8 PhD-granting programs.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the general direction of the Co-Director of Science Libraries (Collection Services), this position is responsible for the development and management of the Library's collections in medicine (excluding nursing) through understanding of research and teaching trends at the University and beyond, the structure of the scholarly literature in medicine, and patterns of scholarly communication. Communicates with faculty, clinical staff and others to determine collection needs. Works in collaboration with other science selectors and the Co-Director of Science Libraries (Collection Services) to prioritize selection of interdisciplinary science and medicine resources. Makes recommendations for acquisition of expensive or unusual titles requiring special funding. In collaboration with the Co-Director and other Library staff, is responsible for preservation reviews, selection of titles for local digitization efforts, review of gifts materials, and collections space management.
Participates in scheduled reference shifts (including weekends on rotation) in the John Crerar Library, providing reference by phone, email, and via instant messaging. As part of a team of dedicated science and biomedical librarians, provides in-depth research and instructional support, as well as general reference and instructional service. Creates, edits, and maintains LibGuides for medicine and other assigned subject areas.

Education: A graduate degree from an ALA accredited library school is required, as is a demonstrated strong commitment to professional development. An undergraduate or graduate biomedical or other science degree is preferred.
Experience: Required: Previous experience in an academic health sciences or an academic science library serving a biomedical community; knowledge of literature organization in medicine; skill in identifying and acquiring resources; knowledge of medical bibliographic databases and other reference sources. Preferred: Experience in collecting, reference and instruction; experience in library-provided data management services; knowledge of current and developing information technologies and their applications to reference and research activities.
Skills: Required: Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills; ability to analyze issues and problems, evaluate possible solutions, and implement best choice; strong organizational and planning skills; ability to prioritize, coordinate and perform tasks; ability to work independently and in a collaborative team environment; experience using library computer applications and desktop Windows software; knowledge of web-authoring tools; experience with creating and maintaining web pages. Preferred: Reading knowledge of a second language.
