From the GMR: GMR Funding proposal deadline extended

Network Members,

We recently announced the availability of subcontracts and awards for the next contract year (May 1, 2013 - April 30, 2014). The link to our funding page is: http://nnlm.gov/gmr/funding/

The deadline for the larger awards is past, but we still have funding for at least two Target Outreach subcontracts at the $15,000 level. The NEW DEADLINE for Target Outreach submissions is May 24, 2013.

In addition, we are extending the deadline for the smaller awards, with the NEW SUBMISSION DEADLINE of April 12, 2013. The smaller awards include:

Community Preparedness ($2,000)
Exhibit ($1,500)
Outreach Express ($4,500)
Planning and Assessment ($2,500)
Technology Awareness ($4,500)

If you have questions about these funding opportunities, you may contact the GMR Program Coordinator assigned to the award (see the Call For Applications to find this information) or for the subcontracts, you may contact me directly.

From the GMR: Project Funding Deadlines Approaching

As a reminder, the GMR has some upcoming deadlines for submission of funding proposals. We recently announced the availability of subcontracts and awards for the next contract year (May 1, 2013 - April 30, 2014). The link to our funding page is: http://nnlm.gov/gmr/funding/

We will again be offering one Major Outreach subcontract for $25,000 and three Target Outreach subcontracts for $15,000 each. The submission deadline for these subcontracts is March 22, 2013.

Description: The Public Services Librarian provides and promotes access to
the library's resources and services for students, faculty, and staff using print, e-mail, social media, and web communications. The Public Services Librarian also manages the daily function of the circulation/information desk, including reserves, coordinate reference services, and provide formal and informal instruction in the use of library services/resources.

Duties:

1. Coordinate formal and informal instruction, orientation, and support in use of library resources for curricular and extracurricular purposes, provide reference service to patrons using all sources, and perform literature searches in response to requests from faculty, staff, or health professionals.

2. Plan, develop, and implement university-wide outreach programs and strategies, and communicate news of library collections, services, and other library events to the university community and beyond.

3. Ensure that the desk is properly staffed ~95 hrs./week, manage reserves collection, manage circulation functions of the library management system and train staff in circulation functions, handle all statistical and financial recordkeeping aspects of the circulation department, train new student and evening/weekend staff, supervise student assistants and library clerks, and conduct performance evaluations.

4. Coordinate library web page updates and 2.0 communication tools (Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, etc.).

5. Coordinate electronic resources, negotiate licenses, and maintain records for contracts.

6. Evaluate print and e-resources for possible addition to library collection.

7. As subject specialist, recommend new materials for library collection, perform scanning of journals in subject area to stay current on latest trends and research, meet periodically with department representative to learn issues/concerns.

Qualifications:
* ALA accredited Masters degree (MA, MS, MLS) or equivalent in Library/
Information Science
* Four (4) years or more library experience
* Supervisory experience desired
* Web design/2.0 tools
* Academic or medical library background
* Teaching/instruction

Call for Papers/Posters at Midwest Chapter 2013


The Program Committee invites proposals for contributed papers and posters for the joint Midwest Chapter MLA and HSLI Conference to be held October 5-8, 2013 in East Peoria, Illinois. The conference theme is "Navigating a River of Information". We encourage you to take a literal or figurative (use your fertile imagination) approach to our theme. You can highlight various topics such as teaching or education, administration, practical problem-solving, document collaborative efforts or outreach activities, describe innovative programs, or report on research in librarianship, resources or services.

Concurrent contributed papers will be presented on Sunday October 6, 2013 from 11am-12pm and on Monday October 7, 2013 from 10:30am-11:30am.

The posters will be presented Sunday October 6, 2013. They will be available for viewing from 10am - 5pm with presenters present from 4pm-5pm.

For contributed paper proposals and poster proposals submit an abstract no longer than 250 words describing your paper or poster. Include your name, position title, address, phone number and email address on all submissions.

The deadline for abstract submission is Friday May 24th before the Memorial Day weekend. Notifications of paper and poster acceptance will be made by early-mid June.

The Midwest Chapter Professional Practice Committee is again awarding monetary prizes to the best RESEARCH papers and posters. Look for more information soon about applying.

UPDATE ON VALUE OF LIBRARIES STUDY

The NN/LM MAR website has been updated with the last of the special reports. 1) for physicians and residents only, 2) nurses only, 3. AAHSL members only, and 4) non-AAHSL members only.
