Registration for the HSLM workshop and annual meeting on Friday, May 31st, 2013 is open! Workshop: Evidence Based Practice: A Refresher for Librarians Jonathan Koffel, Clinical Information Librarian at the UMN Bio-Medical Library, will be presenting Evidence Based Practice: A Refresher for Librarians. The goal of the session is to help librarians solidify and expand their own evidence based practice skills. The session will cover why evidence based practice is important, how to interpret core statistical measures and figures and how to critically appraise cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, and systematic reviews. Attendees will have the chance to work in small groups to critically appraise example articles and practice what they have learned.

The HSLM Annual Meeting will be held in the afternoon. Beverages, a light continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

DEADLINE MAY 17TH: New, better awards to support meeting attendance at Midwest Chapter/MLA in October!

Exciting news from the Midwest Chapter/Medical Library Association Awards and Scholarships Committee! We've been listening to our members, and after approval at the Board meeting last week, the awards to support attendance at the Midwest Chapter Annual Meeting just got BETTER!!!

There is a NEW award to support meeting attendance that is open to anyone (not just students and first-time attendees), and now all meeting support awards include a FREE full conference registration as well as $500 to help cover your travel. Additionally, the deadlines have been moved to May 17th, to give you much more time to plan for
conference attendance.

You are cordially invited to a lecture by historian of medicine and bibliophile Dr. W. Bruce Fye in honor of Elaine Challacombe's retirement as curator of the Owen H. Wangensteen Historical Library of Medicine. Dr. Fye, Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and Medical History at the Mayo Clinic, will present, "A Personal Story of the Blending of Bibliomania and Historical Scholarship."

To honor Elaine and her great contributions to the Wangensteen Collection, we have established the Elaine Challacombe Visiting Scholar Fund. The Challacombe Fund will allow researchers, students, and independent scholars to come to the Wangensteen Library and take advantage of the truly remarkable collections that Elaine has nurtured and developed over her 24 years as curator.

Elaine Challacombe has enjoyed a successful career in Rare Books and Special Collections, first at the Strong Museum in Rochester, NY, and later at the Wangensteen Historical Library of Biology and Medicine. Under Elaine's leadership the collection has expanded in scope and content, growing from 30,000 books to approximately 70,000 volumes, many of them valuable and unique items in medical history.

SLA-Minnesota Invites You to Attend: Data Tools for Visualization & Insight

Data Tools for Visualization & Insight
A Bring-Your-Boss Event!

Join us for a "double-feature" learning lunch with presentations on data tools from both the Wilder Foundation and East View Geospatial. SLA members may bring their boss for free!

Jane Tigan from the Amherst H. Wilder Foundation will present Minnesota Compass, a social indicators project that measures progress statewide. Compass provides data and tracks trends in topic areas such as education, economy, workforce, health and immigration. Tigan will discuss the trends impacting our state, introduce the data and resources available on Minnesota Compass and explore ways this free tool can help you in your work.

Rodney Buhrsmith and Tony Monsour from East View Geospatial will focus on visualizing and using data in a geospatial framework. Tabular and unstructured data are being exploited by GIS (Geographic Information Systems) and increasingly, non-GIS professionals, thanks to the explosion of the Geospatial Industry. Buhrsmith and Monsour will demonstrate how to visualize and manipulate data on a common GIS platform, ArcGIS, as well as on their web-based EVGeoCloud platform built for non-GIS professionals.
