HIV/AIDS Community Information Outreach Projects 2013

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is pleased to announce the solicitation of quotations from organizations and libraries to design and conduct projects that will improve access to HIV/AIDS related health information for patients, the affected community, and their caregivers.
Projects must involve one or more of the following information access categories:

  • Information retrieval

  • Skills development

  • Resource development; and/or

  • Equipment Acquisition

Emphasis is placed upon the following types of organizations or arrangements for developing these programs:

  • Community-based organizations (CBOs) or patient advocacy groups currently providing HIV/AIDS related serves to the affected community

  • Public libraries serving communities in the provision of HIV/AIDS-related information and resources

  • Health departments or other local, municipal, or state agencies working to improve public health

  • Faith-based organizations currently providing HIV/AIDS-related services; and/or

  • Multi-type consortia of the above-listed organizations that may be in existence or formed specifically for this project

Awards are offered for up to $40,000.

Quotations are due to NLM on Thursday, July 18, 2013.

From the GMR: NLM FUNDING: Disaster Health Information Outreach and Collaboration Projects 2013

Here is a funding opportunity forwarded from NLM.

New NLM Funding Opportunity: Disaster Health Information Outreach and Collaboration Projects 2013

NLM is looking for submission of innovative proposals that enhance mutually beneficial collaboration among libraries and disaster-related agencies. For example, projects may increase awareness of health information resources, demonstrate how libraries and librarians can assist planners and responders with disaster-related information needs, show ways in which disaster workers can educate librarians about disaster management, and/or include collaboration among partners in developing information resources that support planning and response to public health emergencies. Contract awards will be offered for a minimum of $15,000 to a maximum of $30,000 each for a one-year project.

The deadline for responses is Thursday, June 20, 2013 at 2 pm ET. Responses are limited to six pages plus supplemental materials such as resumes, letters of support, and a budget.

Workshop: Evidence Based Practice: A Refresher for Librarians Jonathan Koffel, Clinical Information Librarian at the UMN Bio-Medical Library, will be presenting Evidence Based Practice: A Refresher for Librarians. The goal of the session is to help librarians solidify and expand their own evidence based practice skills. The session will cover why evidence based practice is important, how to interpret core statistical measures and figures and how to critically appraise cohort studies, randomized controlled trials, and systematic reviews. Attendees will have the chance to work in small groups to critically appraise example articles and practice what they have learned.

The HSLM Annual Meeting will be held in the afternoon. Beverages, a light continental breakfast and lunch will be provided.

HSLM Ballot

It time to vote for the HSLM Chair-Elect.

This year I am pleased to introduce Sue Gray as the candidate for the HSLM Chair-Elect. Sue Gray is a Reference and Circulation Librarian at the St. Catherine University Minneapolis Campus Library. She has been at St. Kate's since receiving her MLIS in 2005. Sue works with students in a variety of allied health science fields, and is the liaison librarian to the Master of Arts in Holistic Health Studies program. Before becoming a librarian, she was a student affairs officer at the Haas Center for Public Service, Stanford University, and an advocacy consultant for the Alzheimer's Association Minnesota-North Dakota Chapter.

Sue was the 2011-2012 co-chair of the Complementary and Alternative Medicine Special Interest Group (CAMSIG), Medical Library Association. In that leadership role, she co-authored an article about CAM internet resources for the November 2012 MLA News. She was also a member of the Publicity Committee for the Midwest Chapter MLA Annual Meeting held in Rochester.

Description: This beginning class is intended to develop basic searching techniques and search strategies that will take advantage of the PubMed interface to MEDLINE. This course will provide an in-depth view of the system and demonstrate utilizing the features of PubMed to search effectively.
