Friends of Seminary Fen, Chanhassen Minnesota

Request to have a Master Naturalist provide assistance to the
Friends of Seminary Fen, Chanhassen Minnesota
The Friends group is sponsored by the Lower Minnesota Watershed District http://www.watersheddistrict.org/

The MDNR Seminary Fen Scientific and Natural Area protects one of the best quality calcareous fens in the Twin Cities portion of the Minnesota River Valley. The SNA includes calcareous fen, sedge meadow, emergent marsh, and shrub swamp native plant communities and maple basswood forest and oak woodland on bluffs adjacent to the wetlands. The fen harbors eight state listed rare plant species.

Over the last decades the property has been unattended and is now in need of stewardship to protect this rare feature and its associated plant communities from being degraded further. In collaboration with several local partners, MDNR staff has developed a Stewardship Plan for Seminary Fen SNA. The stewardship plan outlines recommendations for inventories of rare species, planting of buffers for erosion control, conversion of cropped lands to native species, and control of non-native plants like garlic mustard. The Friends of Seminary Fen have participated in this planning exercise and are eager to offer their time and energy to begin to tackle some of these tasks.
Scientific and Natural Area Staff will continue to plan and orchestrate the restoration work but will not always have time to dedicate to facilitating the volunteers during their work events. The Friends would benefit from having an expert they can rely on to guide them with their work. A Master Naturalist could provide the Friends with guidance in such tasks as identifying native verses non-native species, helping them collect seed, directing them on planting plans as well as providing them with opportunities to learn about the significance of the biologic and geologic features within Seminary Fen SNA.

If you are interested in helping this dedicated group get started with their Stewardship Plan please contact:
