Monarch Monitoring Project

Great, exciting news! The milkweed has sprouted this week in Lilydale Park! And a monarch butterfly has been seen in the area. It's time to kick into gear and start our 6th season of monitoring!

Volunteers are needed immediately for this season's Monarch Monitoring Project in Lilydale Park. You can come volunteer once - or as many times as you'd like May-Sept. No prior experience required. Our experienced lead volunteers can quickly & easily help you learn the necessary knowledge & skills on site - and then you, too, can become a Citizen Scientist! Young people are welcome in the company of an adult. In fact, we need 2-4 volunteers who can help monitor this coming Thursday, May 21, 6-8pm. Could that work for you? Read on for details below about how to sign up.

Weather permitting, we will monitor each Thursday evening, 6-8pm from now until the end of September. If there's steady or pouring rain, thunder or lightening - we won't monitor. Instead, come the next week. If it's drizzling or threatening rain, we'll be there to monitor.

THE PROJECT: Friends of Lilydale Park is beginning its 6th season of gathering data for the University of Minnesota's Monarch Larva Monitoring Project. Learn more about the long-term study: www.mlmp.org

LOCATION: Lilydale Park (just east of Harriet Island & just west of the Pool & Yacht Club). You'll find us at the corner of Water Street/Lilydale Road and the drive that goes to the Mississippi River boat ramp.

HOW TO VOLUNTEER:
We have a Monarch Team Captain designated for each Thursday of the month. Each Thursday we need a minimum of 2-4 volunteers & we need to know in advance that we have at least that many people signed up for each session. You can come once - or as many times as you'd like during the season, but we do need you to sign up in advance, please.

To sign up for a Thursday volunteer session, please e-mail: LilydaleMonarchs@gmail.com In the e-mail, please let us know which Thursday (date) you plan to volunteer. The Monarch Team Captain for your night(s) will follow-up and contact you by e-mail to confirm. (Or please leave a phone # if you prefer a confirmation phone call.)
