A Comment Lost
I posted this comment on Il Bloggo, but the blogger deleted it (as is certainly her right to do). Had planned a much longer post, but decided to keep it short.
I think it is important to maintain perspective here. They are stuffed cats that are not being sold. The whole craft movement, to me, is about open sourcing. Just look at Craftster and the community of shared ideas that may be used freely by those who choose to be constructive. I think it would be a real shame for the DIY movement and crafting in general to be overcome by the same ideology that fuels copyright commodity and capitalism in general. We are constantly using our experiences with material culture to create objects. Certainly a respectful environment should be maintained, but so, too, should the spirit of generosity prevail.

I have to say I agree with you. Making one for yourself is a huge part of what crafting is all about.

Interesting! I find it strange that she deleted your comment - apparently not wanting any dissenting opinions. As you say, a lot of hoo ha about a stuffed cat.
Anyhow, I found your blog via A Dress A Day while back, and I've been busy copying your projects ever since. ;-)
Best wishes,
S.

What is worth to be called a creation is ruled by copyright because it is an endless problem. For amateurs (wich most of the crafters are) it's only a question of pride. If other people copy so easely just from a picture, that means that this so-called creation is not so original, don't you think?? pride, pride... There is no question about money between crafters amateurs, so let everybody be inspired by everybody, let the ideas travel, don't blog only to get positive comments wich care your ego.

I don't like the way she's handled the whole thing, including her sniffy response in her comments to the woman who had copied her in the first place. I'm a bit flummoxed that she would delete your comment, as well. And I *have* been copied before, I think most people who make things have had this experience!

ellie & S: Good for you! Isn't it great to make/copy/be inspired?
sof frankenstein: C'est tellement vrai et je suis d'accord avec toi!

Yes - it is great!
In the fine arts, copying used to be a time-honored way to learn one's "craft."
And we all live together here, constantly inspired by one other's work, the popular media, etc. - lots of similar things wind up in different people's work all the time - consciously/unconsciously.
It's actually kind of cool, if you think about it. That's how you can tell what time-period we live in.

i made a hat once, and saw that others made a similar hat, so posted the pattern, because i got really excited that others were making the same hat! (sometime with mention to me sometimes not)
As long as no one is selling it, its not copyright infringement.
PLUS my roomate has a cat he made that looks exactly like that cat, that he made in middleschool sewing class.

Let's hope she deleted it by accident. It's too weird otherwise. :/

I agree. Can't believe your comment was deleted. That generosity of spirit thing seems to be missing in some folks...

Well, I'm guessing the blogger felt like a dictionary was thrown at him or her. The comment might be technically useful and sincere but it sounds like an english professor talking down to a student.
