For Your Inspection

Tini warned me about the possibility of bad buttonholes on my new machine. I was worried and made a few. They didn't look all that bad to me, but then I had the thought: What if my buttonhole standards are just too low?? This is a distinct possibility. So here is a pretty average buttonhole from the new machine to test:

It is not actually wobbly at the top, that is just a dot from the fabric. Now I know that it's not going to be winning any awards, but it looks ok to me. Also, I prefer them in matching thread, so that should make any unevenness less visible. On the whole, better than my other machine! But I guess that's not hard...

Does it pass the test? Or do I need to raise my Official Buttonhole Standards?

You are not submitting your garments for some contest, they are for your pleasure, so...yup, the buttonholes look OK. One thing I ALWAYS do is apply Fray Check seam sealant to the back of the buttonhole (and a little on top) and allow it to dry before cutting the buttonhole open. I use one of those buttonhole cutter sets consisting of a small piece of wood and a very sharp small chisle. This contributes to the look of the finished buttonhole and there are fewer of those stray pieces of ravely fabric.

Hi Villain,

I'll make a couple of buttonholes into my shirred blouse tonight and will put up a pic of the Bernina made buttonholes.
So far I don't think yours are bad. Have you tried them as you would make them into a blouse with a facing thus a seam along the edge ( darn I still need to work on my sewing term English. That is so hard to explain)

I've only tried them on scrap fabric so far. If it is just my skill, I can work on that. My real concern was that the machine would give me a hard time. Since I can't afford to buy a better one (or even this one, really) the point is probably moot. Guess it's good that I don't make a lot of things with buttons...

That's a fine, standard buttonhole. Someday, you'll learn the joy of bound buttonholes, and then your life will disappear...

...actually, just don't discover bound buttonholes. They really aren't worth it unless you're working with something that's going to tear out of a machine buttonhole. But they do look awfully cool.

Your's look great, Tini! I will keep practicing. I don't make too many things with buttons, but I ought to make more shirts. They're probably more practical than dresses in the long run. I've just been bitten by the dress bug! As far as bound buttonholes go, they are loverly. One day I'll make that winter coat I have been dreaming of...
