An Old Lady

It has been a while since I finished that last dress, and it may be a while before I finish another. Well, a few days anyhow . This is because I am an old lady. You see, I have had back problems ever since high school, when I herniated two discs in my lumbar spine. (thanks a ton, gymnastics) Well, my current malady is not exactly related, but I strained the old thing on Sunday. I did it in such a way as to prevent my sitting down for more than about 15 minutes at a time without pain. So, mostly I've been pacing about the apartment for two days. Figures that my two main activities, internet and sewing, would be right out the window. Sewing is especially hard on my back. This is probably due to my makeshift sewing table (a nightstand from my bedroom set) being too low. One day I will get a nice table and a nice chair. One day!

In other news, I have the prospectus meeting for my dissertation tomorrow morning and then at night J COMES HOME!!!! OMG!!! Nine months of Warcraft and cellphones and finally my minou is coming back to me. This momentus occasion will call for fancy pizza and red wine! Yay!

Sorry about your back acting up. I've thrown my neck out a couple times from sewing. I find that proping my machine up on my unabridged Webster's helps a bit.

Oh, that's a good idea! I might have a spare Riverside Shakespeare around here somewhere, but if not, I'm sure that one of my old art history textbooks will work. Ok must pry myself off the computer!!

I have back problems too; I know how that can be really annoying... I knit lying down on my sofa that really helps. When I sew, I take a minute or two to stretch once in a while. Hope you get better soon!

My advice for cheap comfortable seating is this: Go to a used office furniture store. You can find very expensive, well-designed used office chairs which are completely adjustable, very cheaply. These are vastly superior to the cheap office chairs you see being sold most places. Face it, businesses don't like employees to be home with back problems. You can make a little slipcover yourself or have the chair reupholstered for about $95 in my area. I bought a $700 chair for $100 and it was the smartest thing I ever did. It's a heavy metal chair with a myriad of adjustments, all pnuematic. It has armrests and is upholstered in a hard wearing wool, which cleaned up easily.

A melamine board over two file cabinets or small chests or even sawhorses works well as a sewing table. The melamine boards are cheap at the hardware store. You deserve to be comfortable if you sew alot!!!

One of my friends with back problems actually stands to compute - she got a setup like the anchors use on TV when they stand, and it's a lot better for her back. Just a thought....hope you heal soon!

It is feeling much better now! I stayed off it for a few days and we got a new computer chair that is really comfy. I think that a standing set-up would surely limit my internet time, though that is probably a good thing!!
