Dancing Machine Out of Order

Often, when J takes my picture, he tries to get me to laugh. That is all well and good, but usually he takes *forever* to snap it and I have to try to extend the laugh as long as I can. That is why I usually opt for the "looking seriously to the side" pose. Here is the outcome of today's adventure:

I cut out this shirt and started to sew it last night. I realized, before it really went together, that it was going to end up looking like scrubs. I mean waaaaay like scrubs. Let's just say that is a fashion choice that I want to avoid, even if previous experiments have turned out pretty scrubby...(cough third shirt cough)

I decided to try my hand at a little on-the-fly alteration and while it is still a little lumpy (and please don't look under the arms), it is FAR better than it looked before. I mean, really, what was I thinking? Well, I guess I was thinking that a breezy pullover top would be good wearin' round the apt and it will be, but not in its original form. Ok, ok so I have enough "breezy" (which might translate to sloppy?!) clothes and need to rev up the ol' wardrobe with some real gems. I think I should try some Hot Patterns, though they intimidate the hell out of me. I have been doing this for a while now, but I feel like I'm nowhere near good enough to take one of those on. I'm going to make this collared shirt and ponder it...

Anyone have any tried and true shirts that they recommend?

I have made good experiences with burda patterns (world of fashion) they seem to be true to size, just the tracing is a bit annoying or Onion patterns are another fav of mine. I do have an ottobre woman mag somewhere in this mess of a sewing space, that I want to try out. You might want to look at the Hotpatterns reviews over at www.patternreview.com

I pause my lurking to tell you that I really enjoy your blog. I've been reading long enough that I don't remember how I found it. Had to stop and comment that I think something like an obi sash in some coordinating fabric would make this blouse look less like a scrub.

I have made 7 camp shirts from 'The Camp Shirt' pattern and booklet by Cindy Taylor Oates. All sizes 6-22 are included. The front and back cover show several color combinations and choices. I've done some in plain fabric and some in '2 co-ordinating fabrics' combinations. I created a breast pocket, which the pattern does not have. The instructions are easy to follow and the shirt makes up quickly. The shirt is good for at home, SciFi convention outfits and SciFi con leisure outfits with matching pants, and good with jeans. I made my husband and myself matching Flamingo shirts to wear at cons and used this pattern for myself. I just checked Amazon.com and one copy is available.

That obi idea is really great. I had a similar thought with a regular belt, but the fabric would probably look best. I'll keep my eyes peeled for something that matches!
