Jamaican me Crazy

Ok, sorry for that title. Really. You can forgive me, right? It's because I JUST bought roundtrip tickets for our honeymoon in Jamaica!!! OMG. I've never been on such an island and it has been years since I've actually been able to swim in seawater. My hatred and sometime resentment of lakes is well known. We are planning on staying at the Rockhouse Hotel. No beach, but lovely and cheap and they even have their own foundation for improving education on the island. Pretty cool. It is on the cliffside of western Negril and has its own private cove.

I also put a deposit on the reception and reserved rooms at a B&B for folks coming to Boston. I should have a wedding website up sometime after we choose a ceremony spot. Things are moving along quite well. I'll be able to order the silk for the dress soon and actually get sewing again. I got three yards of it in a beautiful orange and I will start on a practice dress tomorrow. I'll do the muslin for the actual gown in cotton, I think, though the silk was very cheap and is good quality. Twelve bucks a yard including shipping! Yeehaw!

A question for you: did you change your name when/if you got married? I am certainly not taking his (no offense, parents of J), and we were planning on taking a new name entirely. J's first suggestion was "Strange," but that is too gothy. We are thinking about going with Lumen. Thoughts?

Your hotel looks beautiful! Coincidentally, I am also going to Jamaica this summer for my honeymoon, staying at Sandals Whitehouse. I can't wait to see your wedding dress come together; I'm planning to make my own as well, but probably won't start for a few more months. Good luck with the rest of your planning!

I can't offer any advice on your name, but I'm sure looking forward to seeing your wedding dress, both the muslin and the real thing. Years ago, I wanted to make my own wedding dress and unfortunately believed the nonsense that it was supposed to be bad luck for the bride to sew her own dress. I still wish I had made my dress so good for you.

Orange silk! How gorgeous, I can't wait to see it come together.

I kept my last name and added my husbands name after it. For ages I just continued to use my "maiden" name, but it really is a pain: I don't know how things are in Boston, but here in the Midwest its a nightmare having a different last name from your husband. Its also tough remembering what name you used for things like reservations, pizza orders, etc.

Lumen would be cool...It'll be hard switching to calling you the Lumens; I've been using the L-Ts since you two moved in together!

The name was tricky for me. We ended up both taking both names, actually. Although his last name is our legal last name and technically my last name we both have as a middle name (although I kept my original middle name whereas my husband ditched his). I struggled with the whole thing, to be honest. Friends of ours took the last syllable of each of their names & made a new last name from that.

We both kept our own name. With him, it was not considered unusual because most Dutch men keep there own name. I am being adressed by his last name though, mostly by telemarketeers (who just don't listen when you answer the phone with your name) and family (uncles and aunts). When you go through with both changing your names to a new one, it might be a whole bucket of fun.

I did change my name to my hubby's when we got married. I had a really long & hard to say last name growing up & I always wanted a shorter, easy to pronounce last name. His is short & easy to pronounce, so I was happy to have his last name. (Although if it hadn't been, I did tell him I probably would have made him change his last name to something short & easy to say:)

You will love the Rockhouse. My husband and I stayed there last spring (our second anniversary),and it was heavenly.

I've been sporadically reading your blog for a little while, and that little tidbit just made me come out of the shadows.

Have a great time (and congratulations).
