With Flair!

Today we went to a cute little dress shop on Newbury Street called Flair. The sales associate was very nice and I tried on a bunch of things. Nothing, luckily for me, stood up to my own work. Yay! There were a couple cuties and some real losers. Also, The Villain Wears White (gasp!):

This was cute and sort of 50s. It was tea-length and didn't cut my calves off as much as it seems in the pic. Too bright a red for the wedding, though.

This was the only one that fit right off the hanger. I felt like a French chanteuse - tres sexy! I like it more for a special occasion dress than a wedding dress.

And here is Mme Villain! She is pinned in back and while she might need to come in a bit more in some places than in others, the sides do meet, so I won't have to add new panels. Score! I'm not going to touch it until a little closer to the date, after I get some undergarments that will work properly. Hello, Spanx!

Love, love, love the one you made! It looks great!

I like it a lot. And there's nothing noticeable along the waist/bodice-skirt seam unless you're actively looking for what you described before...I think you can rest easy on that count. Is the top sitting nicely with the structure taken out, or is the arm positioning necessary to keep it up?

Gorgeous! I am soooo impressed. I love that you made your own dress.

I'm glad you all like the one I made (and I don't have to keep my arms that way; it should stay up fine, especially once I have a bra on).

My mom saw the white one and was like, "OH MY GOD THAT IS THE ONE! THAT IS IT!" I was sort of deflated by that. It was really only on a whim that I even tried on the white one. I felt sort of silly in it; like a poseur. Not that women shouldn't wear white dresses if they want, I just felt like I was pretending.

I love the dress you made. The white one was also gorgeous, if that is what you are looking for. I think those both were great on you because you have gorgeous shoulders!

Looooooooooooove that bodice on your dress!!!!

Posted by: Lory at April 18, 2008 10:56 PM

The white one does fit like it was made for you too. That's probably what your mom meant, of course, with a little of that "brides wear white" thing that is part of the ingrained American culture.

But the red does seem more like the you we know from your blog. It looks great! And you are so right to wait till nearer the date to do any major fitting and finishing as you have no idea what your weight might be nearer the date.

By the way, how tall are you? I also thought you seemed on the tall side, 5'7" or 5'8".

Hey, did you try on any of the Conscious Clothing gowns? I've always wondered about those.

Posted by: lsaspacey at April 20, 2008 02:38 AM

Your dress is turning out gorgeous! I wouldn't have thought to pick a red for a weddimg dress (I'm a quasi-redhead so it would look awful on me anyway) but it's really working for you! Way better than the white one. And I agree, the purplish dress would be far better suited to a sexy cocktail party.

Y'all are so sweet! The white one didn't feel like it fit very well (it was clipped in the back), but I'm glad it looks like it fit.

Wait, do you think I'm tall?! hahahahahahahaha (Wiping tears of laughter from my eyes)

I'm 5'2. J is 5'8.

:D

I really really love the one you made the best. I didn't even know you made it until I read the post.

did you do the foundation layer that the pattern calls for? it seems like all the reviews I read for this pattern, everyone leaves that out. Thanks!

Posted by: Brooke at July 11, 2008 06:55 AM

Yes, Brooke, I left it out. The dupioni was plenty sturdy enough on its own. Unless it was very very thin, I would just leave out the foundation.
