Over the course of my time at UMD I have written various articles and stories for The Statesman, as well as for my journalism classes.

These articles showcase various writing styles, my ability to meet deadlines, finding the story, finding sources, and interviewing people.

Below are pdfs and linked articles have written in my journalism classes:

A narrative article feature the ethics and decisions behind a difficult situation - photo usage. I contacted the editor of the Ely Timberjay to find an ethical issue to write my article on. I am very proud of this article because it is the very first narrative article I have written. I want to note that I don't have the girl's name who is a big part of my story, but I went to great lengths to get her name. I called the Madison county police department and went to great lengths to get find her name. I'm proud of the fact that I tried all that I could to get her name, even if I couldn't find it.

A residence inn was in the process of construction (starting construction) near Cub Foods. For this article I was go to out in my community (Duluth Heights) and find something to write about, so I decided to write about the construction. I went above and beyond for this article, and it is one that I am most proud of to this day. I walked up to the construction workers trailer, knocked and interviewed someone. I even went up to the house that is directly behind the hotel and spoke with the house owner who wasn't happy about the contruction. I really went out of my comfort zone for this article, which makes it very meaningful to me.

Soap box derby racing was a favorite pastime in Duluth, especially where the Hartley Nature center is. This artilce is a history article I did for my beat area (Woodland) in a class. In order to find my main source, I had to call a few numbers and leave many messages. On the last day possible to talk to a source and write my article, I finally heard back from him. I'm not always this lucky, but this story is pretty amazing. It's one that many people in Duluth still don't know about.

The 2008 elections stirred up some opinions on who should be president. In order to write this article, I had to go to a certain area (the mall) and find random people that would talk to me about it.
