Final installation at the Tweed Museum of Art
The process of printing on glass using Lazertran Inkjet paper is simple.
Supplies:
A clean piece of glass
Rubbing alcohol
Lazertran Inkjet Paper
Water
Polyurethane (optional)
A printed peice of lazertran paper. I trimmed off the excess white space.
Place this in water for 60 seconds and a gummy decal containing the ink will slide off.
Place the wet decal on glass coated with rubbing alcohol.
Any Lazertran not printed on will dry an opaque white.
When polyurethane is applied to the dried surface, the white will turn clear and the ink will be translucent.
I used alcohol prep pads on the glass. It is best when applied immediately before the printed decal. A nice healthy coat works best to adhere the image.
For each piece, I used a template of the final image and placed each piece of glass on top of it. This assured everything was aligned properly.

The back panel had to be replaced. The blue feathers were placed too high.
This is the very first attempt with the Lazertran.
This piece did not turn out because I did not trim the white space.
It also did not adhere correctly to the glass because I did not use enough alcohol.
I also used 2 coats of polyurethane, which turned the colors translucent.
Colors are much brighter without the polyurethane
After making the tiny mock up with inkjet transfer paper, i made another one using clear transfer paper, for a better view.
Printing of glass was the next experiment for me.
This is a tiny mock up of a glass piece I wanted to make.
The plan was to have 4-6 pieces of glass, 10" x 10" ,
This is an image of a peacock feather, cut into 7-8 pieces and printed on inkjet transfer paper.
This is my attempt at printing on aluminum and steel.
I used sandpaper to scratch the surface. I then coated the metal with 2-3 layers of gel medium.
I printed on inkjet trasnfer paper and placed the ink side down on the gel medium.
The process was not a great success for me.
This was probably my best attempt at transferring an image onto metal.
You can see where I used the sandpaper a little too much.

Organization was key for this project. I began by placing a photo of myself in an Illustrator document. Before any illustration was done, I created swatch folders full of the colors of my hair, skin, eyes, and lips. I made separate layers for each as well. Slowly, I layered shapes with a very low opacity over the original image. Eventually, those shapes created depth and covered up the original image.
