Guess all that Burress talk was for naught. The Vikes have picked up a wide receiver and it wasn't Plaxico.
Could this mean that the Vikings draft experts at Winter Park are thinking that Mike Williams and Braylon Edwards will be gone early in the draft or is Taylor to replace Kelly Campbell?
What do you think of this pick-up?
Posted by maasx003 at March 15, 2005 02:34 PM | TrackBackI think he's replacing Campbell.
Posted by: Jim at March 15, 2005 02:35 PMI agree. I think it means Campbell is gone eventually. In that case, I'm all for Taylor. Campbell was just David Palmer with a really big mouth.
Posted by: Brian Maas at March 15, 2005 02:41 PMI think if Edwards or Williams are still available at pick 7 the Vikes will definitely take one of them, even with the addition of Taylor. They are too good to pass up.
Posted by: Shane at March 15, 2005 02:52 PMShane: I also see that Derrick Johnson is dropping in the latest mocks. So who do you choose at #7 if Edwards, Williams, and Johnson are all available? Or even if 2 of the 3 are available at #7? We are so much in need of a LB that I have to lean towards Johnson but he would not produce right away and a WR would.
It's a quandry.
Posted by: Brian Maas at March 15, 2005 02:58 PMIf the Vikes pick up another WR like Gardner in a trade then I think it is a given: they will be going with defense with #7.
However, if they don't and let's say ... Williams and Johnson are available at #7 then I think they will still pick Williams. Like you say, Johnson won't produce right away whereas a WR would.
Having said that, if they do pick Johnson I would not be upset at all. He is obviously a stud and it is high time the Vikings had one of the best defenses in the NFL again.
What do you think they'll do with #18? I hope it is a safety...
Posted by: Shane at March 15, 2005 03:10 PMBrian, did you just say someone was a Quadry?
Posted by: Cheesehead Craig at March 15, 2005 03:20 PMCC: Funny...I have a Quadry signed football. Probably worth about 4, maybe 6 cents.
Posted by: Brian Maas at March 15, 2005 05:19 PMI'm confused. I thought the Vikings were supposed to do nothing in the offseason. COD what is going on? Should I call my favorite football coach for Super Bowl tickets?
The Herd is the Word
Posted by: SBG at March 15, 2005 07:20 PMThe Vikings should use their seventh pick for offense i.e. widereceiver. Travis is a good depth pickup in case Kelly gets arrested or released, or Marcus Robinson gets injured. I should have seen this move coming... I mean the always have said they were interested in Taylor and Mike Williams and not Plax. I guess everyone else was in denial. But now I see the logic of using the 7th pick on a receiver and picking up Taylor for depth. Hey and on another note, any poetic justice served that the Vikings second first rounder is at #18, the very same # Mr. Moss will wear for the S&B?
Posted by: Cayman Shutter at March 15, 2005 09:10 PMI think it's a good signing. Plax is a headcase, and probably more of a headache than he is worth. Still think Williams would be a great 1st round pick.
Posted by: Mark at March 16, 2005 06:27 AMI pray that Thomas Davis is still around at #18. Brodney Pool seems to be a reach at that spot.
If DJ, Williams, and Edwards are all gone at #7 (a possibility, if the Titans elect to address their thin WR corps and not their thin CB corps) the Vikes are in a weird position. The people who are supposed to be drafted in the #6-10 range in that scenario would be CBs (Antrel Rolle and Pac-Man Jones) an RB (either Cadillac Williams or Cedric Benson), a QB (Alex Smith), a DE (probably Erasmus James) and OT Alex Barron. Would you see them trying to trade down in this case, or going for a DE or (surprise) Barron?
#18 is murkier. With most of the much-hyped tweeners gone by then, I see a lot of DTs and DEs. One site has them taking Erasmus James at this spot. Before the Pat Williams pickup there was a rotating cast of DTs projected to go here. The DEs possibly available here include Dan Cody (probably gone), David Pollack, Marcus Spears and Matt Roth.
It'd be a treat if Troy Williamson fell to us here if we missed out on Williams and Edwards at #7. I don't know as much about Mark Clayton, but he starts appearing on most draft boards right around this area.
I really don't want to see another young linebacker in the first two rounds unless his name is Derrick Johnson. Shawne Merriman looks like a reach at #7 and will be gone by #18. Let's hope the Vikes can pick up Jay Foreman or another veteran LB.
