At least one person hates the choice of former Wisconsin Badgers QB Darrell Bevell as offensive coordinator of our beloved Vikings. Milwaukee Mark, who knows a thing or two about Bevell express his disdain on Viking Underground Podcast Forty-One. Listen in!
Return of the Poutin' QB
A minute ago I was about to bestow The Poutin’ Quarterback with a flyer, simply a week off from my bashing of his kindergartenesque conduct since THEE injury. You’ve read all that before so I won’t rehash the assortment of examples yet again.
I won’t because The Poutin’ Quarterback keeps sending out vibes that he no longer wants to play for the Vikings and he pulled another head scratcher late last week. Earlier in the week it was reported that The Poutin’ Quarterback was headed to Winter Park to meet mano-a-mano with new head coach Brad Childress.
Instead, Childress had to phone The Poutin’ Quarterback. Had to friggin' drop a dime on him....and The Poutin’ Quarterback was actually in the Twin Cities!!!! Oh yeah, that would certainly go over big with my boss.......riiigggghhhhhhtttttt.
Childress did draw a line in the sand. And this will be The Poutin’ Quarterback's last trial to see if he really wants to play next season wearing a purple uniform. The new boss told The Poutin’ Quarterback to get his derriere here to partake in the Vikings' offseason conditioning program instead of in Orlando where he has been. If The Poutin’ Quarterback fails to show, that will for all intent and purposes clinch his doom.
Where do you think he should be working out? Should The Poutin' Quarterback be at Winter Park per the request of his head coach. Or is it OK to be home in Orlando. Vote in the new poll off to the left.
Worthy of Note
Did you see the USA TODAY article last Friday where they laid out the best coaching candidates available to fill all the openings? I found it fascinating because of the name that was not on the list......Ol' Pencil Ear. Hell, even Mike Sherman got on the list. Scott Linehan, who coached under Tice was on the list. I think that speaks volumes for the respect Tice never received, and apparently will not receive. Besides, Tice seems to be gainfully employed at the moment anyway.

Shameless Plug
I was pleased as a first-time father to see my home theater installation service deem one of my projects worthy of display on their web site. Mine is the first series of photos under the first photo with the caption:
Stewart motorized screen with cabinets for speakers and equipment by Hand Made Homes. Berkline home theater system seating with Sony VPL-HS51 Projector on Chief ceiling mount.
Halsten also installed my other projects in my home and they do great work. I highly recommend their services for those living in the Twin Cities area. For those that missed my original story on my various Home Theater projects, just see my blog entry from May 27, 2005.
Posted by maasx003 at January 16, 2006 06:19 AMI don't think Culpepper is pouting so much as it is being in a state of depression. It is not a recent thing with the hiring of Childress. It started when he got the injury that he dropped off the face of the planet.
Probably precipitated by his poor play with inept coaching thrown in to boot.
Is Culpepper going to be traded? Hard to say, but do we really want to go through a rebuilding phase again? If we want to win in the short term, Culpepper has to stay.
Johnson is not that good anymore, the offense became downright anemic when he started because he is limited. And I am not impressed with Whineart or Vick like Young for us to give Culpepper away.
However, I would be swayed if we came up with a Walker like trade in our favor.

Posted by: Rob Blake at January 16, 2006 07:28 AMRob: I agree that depression is a part of The Pout....as is the upcoming trial related to the Love Boat. But that still is no reason to not show for a face-to-face with the man who will make the decision on who starts at QB this coming season (if Daunte is ready to go!).
My only counter would be which QB is better suited for the West Coast offense out of the gate: BBB or The Poutin' QB? I'd have to say BBB given that he has years of experience with that type of offensive scheme. Doesn't mean I don't want The Poutin' QB....just that he'd spend the entire season learning how to run it. Which is the same as starting over anyway.
Posted by: Mr. Cheer Or Die at January 16, 2006 07:42 AMI agree it's depression. As far as trading Culpepper I believe it's being thought about. To many hidden signs are pointing to it. Since Childress has been hired in my reading of his statements Culpepper has to prove himself. Just this last week IMHO a challenge was laid out to Culpepper. Childress basically said physically Culpepper is on schedule mentally it remains to be seen. His quote I believe was "most elite NFL players can grasp a new system without a problem".
Childress expects Culpepper to be at mini-camps. However with the Vikes getting a new coach we get a extra mini-camp... right before the draft. I really don't believe the Vikings are going to draft a QB but it is interesting.
BBB is not going to perform any better because he is a veteran. Remember, teams blitzed us like crazy because he could not throw long more than one or two throws a game. They do not respect the immobile QB. When blitzed his inaccuracy made the short passing game difficult as well.
We have to live by Cpep or trade him and start young by getting a top QB in the draft- if a team will give you a top 6 pick for a QB coming off injury.
One thing not mentioned is it is entirely possible Culpepper will not be able to come back again, maybe that is why he is so depressed.
As for what happened with Childress meeting, we do not know what happened. Maybe, Cpep tried but CHildress was too busy hiring new coaches for their schedules to work out.

Posted by: Rob Blake at January 16, 2006 08:50 AMRob: With all due respect...you're reaching man. You are correct, we do not know what happened. But then Daunte flew in at Childress' request. It was Childress that wanted to meet face-to-face with Pepper. It was Childress that then had to track The Poutin' QB down....by phone.
So let's review, Daunte only shows up, post injury, for the Lions game and that was because Fowler basically kidnapped him. Daunte then turned down a request from Ol' Pencil Ear to address the team. Daunte then decided to rehabilitate from Orlando rather than Winter Park (but thanks to Gonzo we know much of that was due to doctors orders). Daunte has refused any contact with the local media to talk and set things straight. He now blows off his meeting with the new head coach.
How many benefits of the doubt do we need to give The Poutin' QB before a picture is painted? That being, he simply does not want to be here.
Posted by: Mr. Cheer Or Die at January 16, 2006 08:57 AMLonnie: I agree that trading Daunte is being discussed and no one can blame the team because of the signals The Poutin' QB is sending out. But I don't think they would draft a QB. There are too many good QBs around the league that could be had...such as Rivers. I'm still hoping they go LB with the #1 pick.

First, from Kraig....
"hi,
i'm listening to your podcast #41 and need to make a couple observations regarding your guest from milwaukee.
bevell won the rose bowl as qb of the badgers, true, but he was not the qb of the team while ron dayne was the rb. a guy name brooks bollinger was the qb. truth be told, it was bevell's scrambling for a td that won the game. after graduation, bevell did not jump into the packers qb coach position. i believe that he did coaching stints in northern arizona and uconn, among other places before landing in green bay.
as far as bevell's experience, i agree with everything that was said.... what exactly has bevell done to deserve a oc position? one thing that wasn't touched upon is this - the vikes are going to have someone calling plays next season (probably childress) and who ever is calling those plays have not called a single play in the nfl. the closest is when childress called the plays while oc in wisconsin.
unfortunately for me, i live 30 minutes south of green bay and get sports radio wduz out of green bay and they are still bent that childress cancelled on them. that snub was compounded when the packers hired mccarthy. in fact, the station has been playing their "this is what you missed if you didn't listen to us this week" commercials that have the two brett favre crotch nuzzlers flaming childress when he said the wilf family has class. very funny to see them going out of their mind.
anyway, just found your site tonight and decided to listen to a podcast. looks like you're doing a good job.. keep it up!
go vikes!

Followup from Milwaukee Mark....
"Yeah I thought about that after I talked with you about Bevell and the Rose Bowl. The Badgers RB for their 1993 Rose Bowl was Brent Moss I believe.
I also found this site with the coaching career of Bevell:
http://www.packers.com/team/coaches/bevell_darrell/
After graduating in 1995, Bevell embarked upon his coaching career with his first assignment coming at Westmar University in Lemars, Iowa (the college has since closed). He served as the passing game coordinator at Westmar in 1996, and also tutored the school's quarterbacks. Bevell moved on to Iowa State the following season (1997) as a graduate assistant, coaching the wide receivers.
We may be in BIG trouble... :)
Mark"
If Culpepper goes and Johnson starts, who will we bring up to take over in 1 or 2 years? (Johnson thinks he can start for 3-4 more, but I just don't think so)
Also, I had a look at your post from last May about home theatre stuff, and I think it's great that you're into quality electronics. On that subject, I have a couple of questions for you. Feel free to ignore or dismiss them if you haven't the time or desire to answer.
My father-in-law is looking to buy a surround sound stereo for his living room, and he's asked me for help. Technology baffles him and I know my way around a Best Buy, so he's "hired" me to find and install a stereo for him.
He said he wants to spend about a grand and draws the line at $1500. He wants me to get him a receiver, a 5 cd changer, a sub, a center channel, and all remaining surround speakers. (He's already got the dvd player he wants and is buying a TV later) I told him that 5.1 is what I'll be looking for, and that I recommend Yamaha, Denon, or Pioneer Elite for a receiver and Klipsch, Infinity, or JBL for the speakers and sub. Do you have any additional brand suggestions? What's the best I can do given the budget?
Also, he wants to pay me for finding, purchasing and installing everything. There are already places for the speakers, so there won't be shelf installing or anything like that. What should I charge? He's got a 32" tube TV he's going to replace eventually; I'm thinking about just asking for that.
Posted by: Peter at January 16, 2006 02:34 PMWhich poutin' quarterback are we talking about. It looks like BBB doesn't want to honor his contract if he can't have his way.
Never mind that he signed for 3 years to be a back-up. He must have been reading some of his hype on this site.
If there's a sucker out there that thinks he can beat a quality team, let's trade him. May be we can get something in return.
I like Brad alot. But he is not the answer.
I heard thru the grapevine the reason why DC didn't show up at the meeting with Childress. He was delayed during his shopping trip at the Mall of America, where he was spotted in a costume shop trying to acquire 'Hulk hands'. Apparently, he wants to hide his small hands from Childress.
OK, ok, I admit that wasn't as good as I could have done!. But it's better than the same old 'stripper', 'Love Boat', 'was confused by the owners manual to his rental car', or 'his luggage was intercepted at the airport baggage claim carousel by Wasswa Serwanga' jokes we've all read & heard lately.
Remember DC saying he 'wanted to play where he is wanted' a few weeks ago? Will Childress ask him what he meant, and why he said it publicly? Maybe that's why he's ducking the meeting. If he were on a cell phone, he could easily duck that question by saying he is getting a call from his doctor or wife or ... and end the call with Childress.
Depression? This long? ... 12 weeks later? Please present your credentials for diagnosing such a condition. If so, then he definitely needs a head doctor; for depression, and for anxiety on the field.
FWIW, I think DC knows his inevitable fate, and wants time for his agent to make untraceable inquiries with AZ, Miami, Houston ( if Linehan ends up there as HC ) and 'Oaf'land.
Peter: See my reply via e-mail. And good luck with the project!
PA Viking: That is a very valid point and something that I'll be following. For the record, BBB is not implpying he doesn't feel 'wanted' like Daunte is spouting....just that he thinks he deserves to start. And I have to think that if Trent Dilfer can start for a team, there is a team in the NFL who could use BBB as well. So, I think BBB's squabble is a horse of a different color. But I take your point.
R Wilk: "Hulk Hands"....classic stuff, man. Keep 'em coming!
