More on Russia

russ002.jpg

On Monday I had written about visiting the local Museum of Russian Art. It had reminded me of a visit to Russia The Wife® and I had embarked on back in 1995. We spent time in Moscow as well as St. Petersburg.

The art we viewed at the Museum of Russian Art had brought back memories of purchasing art from street artists…which was actually very good.

russ011.jpg

I recall walking the streets of Moscow looking at the work of various street artists. And of course, we had to pet every dog since we missed our dogs back in Minnesota.

russ012.jpg

In the evenings we were entertained by folk dancers, or ballet, or attending the Moscow Circus.

russ013.jpg

The Moscow Circus with its live animal acts and tremendous talent, such as this little girl, were a highlight.

Another was getting inside the walls of the Kremlin. Guards were stationed all around.

russ005.jpg

But inside the walls was a rich history of the Russian people. Not to mention their military history as well.

russ008.jpg

The day we spent inside the Kremlin walls was picture postcard perfect with a deep blue sky. The sun glistened off the onion shaped domes of the various buildings and churches.

I also recall our last day in Moscow. I had found out earlier that morning that the Vikes had thrashed the Pittsburgh Steelers 44-24. During breakfast I was busy telling this to all the people on the trip with us. A waiter had sensed that we had something to celebrate and informed us that he would be back with something "very special" to help us continue our merriment.

We wondered if we would receive some fabulous caviar or perhaps some vintage champagne. The waiter returned a short time later with a covered silver tray. With a proud look in his eye he removed the cover and we found ourselves looking at.....hot dogs. "Oscar Meyer for your victory," announced the waiter. "Very difficult to obtain."

There was some minor snickering from the group which I quickly pooh-poohed and went on to explain to the waiter the joys of football tailgating and how much this meal meant to me, having missed out on a Vikings football game while being in a foreign country.

Tomorrow, St. Petersburg.

A hot dog in Russia! What a cool surprise.

I'd like to try and keep Lance Johnstone on the roster... did you bold any of Minnesota's free agents? Don't you want any of them back? Certainly it would be nice to keep Koren Robinson, and with Tice not getting a HC position (unless, somehow, he goes to Oakland) Robinson has got no team to which to follow Tice. Will he stay?

Peter: I did not bold the Vikes FAs but that is because I assume that they will all get a look anyway (save for Bennett!). I agree that Lance would be a nice fit for the Tampa Two type of D which emphasizes speed. And I'm pretty darn certain Koren will be signed.

Can you discuss the FB situation a little bit? Is Kleinsasser not the answer for a run blocker? Both of the FA FBs you bolded have a lot of miles on them - I wonder if they would be a good risk.

Posted by: chapman at January 24, 2006 09:42 AM

Chapman: Good points. I'm sure the Vikes will experiment with JiiiiIIIIIIIIMMMMMYYY! and Richard Angulo at a H-Back type of position. But neither is really a true FB. When is the last time you've seen either run the ball from formation?

Couple that with Kleinsasser's numerous injuries, and I believe we need to bring in some new (albiet old!) blood and look at developing a true FB position.

Posted by: MrCheerOrDIe at January 24, 2006 09:49 AM

What about the WRs? I think to remember that you don't expect them all to be back next year (except for Williamson). Don't you like any of the free-agent Receivers?

Posted by: Renegade at January 24, 2006 10:20 AM

Renegade: It's not that I don't like any of the WRs (Givens and Wayne natch!) but if K-Rob is resigned coupled with retaining Burleson do we really need to spend money at that position. I also thought Williamson came on a bit at the end of the season and will be utilized more in '06.

Plus, if PQ the First gets traded, a stud WR could also be obtained without having to enter the FA market. The teams being mentioned (Oakland, AZ, Miami, & StL) all have some big time WRs.

A few inaccuracies; Edinger is supposedly a UFA, but said he'd be OK with returning to Minn.
Fowler is a MN UFA, not NO. Otherwise, this is a helpful list. I saw one elsewhere, and it probably is slightly different based on interpretations of contract 'option years'.

I agree that the Daunte trade has to be consummated before the Vikes can address the other needs, so this list of FAs means less now than after the potential DC trade. The DC trade will likely yield a vet and a draft pick, so one fewer FA will be needed.

The Vikes plans to bring back some of their FAs will affect the DC trade talks and the player they want in trade. All this hinges on the new personnel guy, who is about to be announced ( guy from SD ).

The salary cap status of teams also impacts the potential FAs. These players whose contracts expired will be joined by players who will be cut due to their team being over the salary cap. Thus, the pickins aren't as slim as it seems from this list.

I absolutely agree with you, COD, WR is certainly not the first possition that has to be adressed. But with considerable amount of talent available through free-agency, it could actually be cheaper than usally to get a more reliable nr. 3 or 4 receiver than we had this season.

Posted by: Renegade at January 24, 2006 02:09 PM

Isn't Childress and company talking about going more to a West Coast type offense? I realize that we have been using a modified WC but if they move more in that direction then we will definitely need a better running game (I like Bennett, by the way, and it's highly unlikely Wizzinator will be retained after his latest fracas), as well as a smart QB - I've never been impressed with DC strenght between the ears. He's just looked so often like deer-in-the-headlights when the heat is on. He's got a great arm, great speed and size but if they go more WC then I'd stick with Brad.

Great photos of Russia! I can only dream of traveling like that one day.... (too many kids in college at once :)
