VU Podcast Forty-Five: Best Moments in Vikings History

sicover.jpg

Welcome to Viking Underground Podcast Forty-Five. Back on February 8, I had taken you down Vikings misery lane and many of you expressed the need to rinse your collective palates and do a "best of" Vikings history segment. I decided instead of writing down my thoughts to invite some people to participate with me on a VU podcast and do a roundtable discussion. You can listen in now!

You may be wondering about the cover you see above. I received many e-mails from readers telling me about their favorite moments in Vikings history but this one resonated with me:

The best moment in Vikings history in my opinion was the team's playoff victory against the Dallas Cowboys in Texas in early 1974 to qualify for the Super Bowl. The team went into the Dallas game as distinct underdogs and they had a great day - Tarkenton, Foreman, Gilliam, Bobby Bryant, the whole '70s gang. The next issue of Sports Illustrated had a nice piece on the game and a cool photo on the cover: Tarkenton signaling to the sideline, holding his fingers an inch apart, and Grady Alderman in the background doing the same thing, and the headline, "The Vikings Go For It." Niiiiiiiiice.

Since I have collected many SI covers of the Vikings over the years, I knew exactly which cover Bob was speaking to.

So, give a listen to the podcast. Can you think of your own favorite moments in Vikings history? Leave a comment at the end of this entry.

Still on the Road

Yes, I'm still on the road. By now, I should have posted some clues as to my whereabouts on the VU Moblog page.

I haven't had time to listen to the podcast, but my favorite Vikings moment has to be when they beat the Rams in a playoff game in Los Angeles in about 1977 or 1978. The Rams had griped for years about having to play the Vikings in the cold in Minnesota, and this time they were going to play them in Los Angeles, so that they were extremely confident they would win. Not only that, but two-thirds of the Vikings starting backfield, Fran Tarkenton and Brent McClanahan, was injured and couldn't play.

What happened? It rained. And it rained. And it rained. The L.A. Coliseum was a sea of mud. The Vikings scored a touchdown at the start of the first half, another at the start of the second half, and won 14-7. The Rams couldn't believe it. The Vikings had won again.

One of my favorite moments was the day that the Vikings came back from a 0-20 defecit to beat the Bears 21-20. The game was early 90's... I want to say '92? Great game.

Another favorite moment was somewhere in the late 80s-early 90s when the Vikings kicked seven field goals and got a safety and won 23-21. It wasn't a great game, but it was just so odd.

Who could ever forget Chris Carter's 1000th reception game? At 999, the pass went to him and he missed it, the cannon went off, the announcers were startled as was the crowd. Then, when Chris finally did get his 1000th in the end zone no less it took about 15 seconds after the fact for the cannon to go off again! Chris was even laughing and shaking his head, Man what a game!!!

I'm a little surprised that nobody has mentioned the game where Joe Kapp, probably the Viking's best Hispanic QB, threw seven touchdown passes. I think it was in 1969 against Baltimore. It was the first win of the year and they wound up going to their first Super Bowl. That was when he coined the slogan "40 for 60" - all 40 guys playing all out for all 60 minutes.

One of my favorites was in the 1987 playoffs when we went to San Francisco as HEAVY underdogs. No chance in the world. And Anthony Carter goes NUTS!!

Joe Kapp is "probably the Vikings best Hispanic QB"? How much competition is there for that title?

None... That's why I felt fairly safe going out on that limb :-)
