Regions, countries, and states are all proud of the wildflowers that grow in their area. Wildflowers of the Holy Land, Wildflowers of America, and Wildflowers of California are just some of the titles from the Rare Book Room, not to mention charming illustrations in antique seed catalogs. With Andersen Horticultural Library head Kathy Allen, you will have an exclusive viewing of these treasures, after which you might want to take the time to look at the living examples in the gardens.

Herbals from the 16th century offer an eye into how important the knowledge of plants was in treating ailments. Without professional doctors at hand, men and women needed to be able to recognize the plants that could provide relief to a large range of illnesses. In this class, Andersen Horticultural Library head Kathy Allen will take you on a journey through these wonderfully illustrated volumes about the plants and what they reveal about how these plants should be used (or not).

The scope and definition of landscape design has drastically evolved in thought and practice of the centuries.
Sometimes the design and construction of a book is as interesting as its contents. Andersen Horticultural Library has some exquisite examples that librarian Kathy Allen will share, including a 40-lb. volume of The Highgrove Florilegium, wrapped in its own handmade blanket. Other items include a book created in 1651, and fine printmaking examples by artist and book maker C.B. Sherlock and wood engraver Gaylord Schanilec.

Andersen Horticulture Librarian Kathy Allen has selected a number of choice items from Andersen Horticultural Library's climate-controlled "vault." They are currently her favorites for their beauty, design, rarity, or just plain quirkiness. In addition to books, an array of antique seed and nursery catalogs and miscellaneous objects will be shared. This is a rare glimpse inside this dazzling library right here at the Arboretum!

Splendid Table

Reprint from the Chaska Herald

A climate-controlled room at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum holds thousands of rare books documenting a half-millennia of natural history. However, Andersen Horticultural Library visitors might find themselves sitting on, rather than reading, an invaluable object.

In the early 1970s, the late Gov. Elmer Andersen and his wife, Eleanor, filled the then-new library with commissions by master craftsman George Nakashima - tables, shelves, magazine racks, display cabinets and even a clock. There are 79 Nakashima pieces in the library, mostly fashioned from American black walnut.

Free Tax Help for International Students

This year, as we have in past years, Wilson Library will host free tax help sessions for international students. Well qualified tax practitioners and students with experience in preparing complicated international student tax returns volunteer their time for this free event. International students wishing to get free tax preparation help should have attended an Orientation Session in the 3M Auditorium, Carlson Building, Saturday, January 28, 2012. After that, international students are invited to attend clinics for free personal assistance with their tax returns Tuesdays, between February 7, 2012 and April 10, 2012, except for spring break (March 13, 2012), between 6:00 pm and 8:30 pm, in room S-30B, Wilson Library.

Students need to bring their W2's, 1042's, a completed federal return using Glacier Tax Prep, and they should try to begin filling in the state M1 and M1PR returns. These tax help sessions have been very popular in past years. The Libraries web page explaining where to get free tax help and free tax forms is at: http://www.lib.umn.edu/libdata/page.phtml?page_id=1043 .

Winter bug may offer climate clues

UMN made the front page of the Star Tribune with this article about
the Midge (Diamesa mendotae), an insect that survives in the Minnesota
winter. U of M Entomology professor, Len Ferrington and Fisheries
professor, Bruce Vondracek are leaders in this study along with many
graduate students and countless others.

"Researchers from the University of Minnesota are working to
understand more about the relationship between these unusual
freeze-resistant insects and the fish that eat them in streams in the
southeastern part of the state. The three-year project is primarily
about brown trout, a popular target for anglers. "We're thinking that
a changing climate and increasing air temperatures will affect water
temperatures, and that could reduce [fish] populations," said
entomology professor Len Ferrington, principal investigator on the
project."

Making an accurate count of our nation's population was never a simple project. From the first census, the nation debated who to count, what questions to ask, and how to conduct the count. The debates over who was counted and why are reflected in the publications produced by the Census Bureau. The library's collection of census-related print publications dates back to the count of 1880 and includes materials published every decade since. In addition to preserving important historical data on the nation's population, these volumes document changes in graphic design, printing techniques, and enumeration technology over the centuries.

We would love to partner with classes to design assignments or projects around census data. If you are interested, please contact Marlys McGuire, our governemnt documents librarian.
