Peer Research Consultants (PRCs) are back for fall semester!

The Peer Research Consultants provide one-on-one assistance to students to help them develop the library and academic research strategies needed to find sources for an excellent research paper. We have drop-in hours in Walter SMART or in MCAE (Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence) in Appleby Hall or students can make an appointment.

Now Available: Berg Fashion Library


The University Libraries now has access to the Berg Fashion Library.

  • Berg Encyclopedia of World Dress and Fashion (June 2010) 3.6 million words in 760 original articles on countries, themes, cultural groups, and dress types written by over 600 international experts.
  • E-Book collection: full text of c.60 Berg fashion e-books with regular updates. An extensive colour image bank including 1,600 images from the V&A Museum's internationally renowned fashion collection and 2,000 from the print Encyclopedia.

The Berg Fashion Library is the first online resource to provide access to
interdisciplinary and integrated text, image, and journal content on world dress and
fashion. It covers all regions of the world, with in-depth content from pre-history to
the present day contributed by internationally-renowned scholars.

SciFinder Scholar Updates for Fall

I just got back from the ACS meeting in Boston and have some SciFinder Scholar news.

* We now have 20 SciFinder Scholar seats available to us. Those seats are split between the client (13) and web versions (7) for now.
* The SciFinder Scholar client software will be available until June 30, 2011.
* Highlighted changes for the web version:
o Find articles using DOIs with Document Identifier
o Sort substance answer sets by MW or MF.
o Set preferences to automatically get rid of MEDLINE results.
o Search Markush structures, generic hypotheticals found in patents, with Explore Substances. It is limited to compounds only found in patents and not well-characterized enough to be included in the Registry.

Minnesota Video Vault

Twin Cities Public Television (TPT) has released the Minnesota Video Vault (online at The vault provides access to hundreds of videos and TPT productions, from short clips to lengthy shows.

The "Educators" button allows you to sort by very broad K12 areas (e.g., Social Science, Science, or Language Arts), then focus by "grade level," then "strand" (e.g., Minnesota History or US History), and then by "sub strand" (e.g., under the Minnesota History "strand" you can select "sub strands" like the "Civil War and Dakota War" or "Contact and Fur Trade"). The "Interest Areas" button provides a more immediate breakdown by history, people, places, MN issues, arts & entertainment, and special collections, with further topical subdivisions beneath that.
