Is this the sign of a superannuated society ?
A perplexed friend who teaches management at a small east coast business school wondered recently. Frankly I dont know and I didnt think that was the right question. Weblogging is both serious business and a fun pastime to which thousands of people seem to devote themselves passionately. Having recently installed MT on my own server account and currently in the throes of learning my ropes around css based webdesign, I can attest to the fact that it takes a while to learn your way around this thing. No wonder most of the serious bloggers appear to be techies to start with or at least become tech-savvy in the process of blogging.
But that is only part of the story. Bloggers often put slices of their lives out in the open for everyone to see. And this usually means crafting a certain persona or even personae for public viewing. This is of course never in isolation from their work and the places they live in. No sir, this is not the simple story of a superannuated society, but one of a new personhood that is emerging. One where work, identity and politics (hm.. sounds like a grad seminar title ?) are being redefined. ahem. But of course it defies theory as yet. And thats why it is exciting. So fasten your seatbelts and hang in there!
