Author:: Cornelia Funke. (If my name were Cornelia Funke, I would write books, too.)
Pages: 534 (548 if you count the excerpt of the sequel, Inkspell.)
Setting: Europe. Modern day Europe. You wouldn't know it, though, except they have some electric lights, and they sometimes drives cars, and there are several references to how miserably people treated books in the Middle Ages.
Means of Aquiration: Someone (my youngest brother, I think) got it for Christmas, which is wonderful. I've been coveting this book ever since I first saw it in Waldenbooks a year(?) ago, but I wouldn't buy it in hardcover.
Importance of Books: Books are extremely important in Inkheart. Everything that happens, happens to books, because of books, or by means of books.
Before I say anything else, I will say this: There is a little gold foil proclamation on the front of this book that exclaims: Soon to be a MAJOR MOTION PICTURE! This means two things. First, you should endeavor to read the book immediately, if not sooner, because as soon as trailers and teasers and reviews start coming out about the movie, you'll already know too much about the story to properly enjoy discovering everything for yourself. (This is not to say that you will not enjoy the book, but simply to say that, as a rule of thumb, everything is better when you experience it for yourself, and this book is worthy of being enjoyed to its fullest extent.) Second, you should read the book before, after, because of, or despite seeing the movie, so long as you go in to it with an open mind.
It really is a good book, and I'd hate to have it ruined for someone.
Also, if you want to read it properly, don't read the description on the back cover. It gives far too much away. The first sentence on the back cover gives away something that isn't even hinted at until page 56 (the second clue doesn't appear until page 69, and nothing's actually stated until Chapter 16, which starts on page 136). I don't know who thought it would be a grand idea to give away the mystery of the first fourth of the book, but I don't think much of them.
Anyway.
This was a wonderfully long book, the sort where you get to the middle, and you realise that a normal book would be over, or just getting into the last two chapters... and you've still got half a book to go! For me, that is a wonderful feeling. Especially with a book I like as much as Inkheart. I read it all yesterday--positively devoured it. I haven't read a book that way for a very, very long time (and I've missed it.)
After my lecture on not letting people spoil books for you, I'm not sure what I can say about the story without giving anything too wonderful away.
There is a wonderful, horrible, evil villain, straight out of fantasy. There is an annoying aunt (who isn't really that bad after all). There is a dad who could win the Atticus Finch Award for being a wonderful father. There is a shifty man who juggles fire. There is a special sort of magic that all bookworms wish they had--now that I've read Inkheart, I'm glad I never did have it. There are fairies and monsters--real and imagined, human and unhuman.
It's a book for people who love adventure (but who might not love it so much if they ever found themselves having one.) It's a book for people who believe in happy endings (although nothing ever ends completely well in real life.) It's a book for people who know and love the characters they read out of stories (even though they have never really met them). Most of all, it is a book for people who love books.
See below for quotes.
"You met him once," said Dustfinger. "It's a long time ago, you won't remember you were so little." He held his hand at knee height in the air. "How can I explain what he's like? If you were to see a cat eating a young bird I expect you'd cry, wouldn't you? Or try to help the bird. Capricorn would feed the bird to the cat on purpose, just to watch it being torn apart, and the little creature's screeching and begging would be as sweet as honey to him."Meggie took another step backward, but Dustfinger kept advancing toward her.
"I don't suppose you'd get any fun from terrifying people until their knees were so weak they could hardly stand?" he asked. "Nothing gives Capricorn more pleasure. And I don't suppose you think you can just help yourself to anything you want, never mind what or where. Capricorn does. Unfortunately, your father has something Capricorn has set his heart on."
-Page 25
Meggie did not reply. She wasn't sure herself why she had asked the question. "This book is very valuable, isn't it?" she asked.Posted by Sara at January 11, 2006 12:11 PM"What, Inkheart?" Elinor took it from Meggie's hand, stroked the binding, and then gave it back. "I think so. Although you won't find a single copy in any of the catalogs or lists of valuable books. But I'm sure that many collectors would offer your father a great deal of money if word got around that he has what may be the only copy. Actually I found out quite a lot about it, and I believe that it's not just a rare book, but a good one, too. I can't give an opinion on that. I scarely managed a dozen pages last night."

Posted by: Jennifer Chiu at April 1, 2006 08:47 PMDear Cornelia,
Hey! i think you are an amazing writer. i wish i was as good a writer as you. when i was younger, i was desperate to be a wrtier,a singer, teacher or actress. my mums a drama teacher, and so iv been sneaking into drama classes sinse i was three. i heard you were making inkheart into a movie, and i freaked out! i would love to just try out for meggie, iv tried out for a movie before, so i have experience being nervous and trying out for things. iv been acting for a long time, of course, my mums a drama teacher! i have brown hair thats wazy esc, and blue eyes, and i think im 5'3, but i haven't been mesured in a very long time. you don't have to email me, you are probably doing important stuff such as not writing to me, but i would love it if you did! por favor, sil vous plaiz, please in whatever language there is. thank you!
Dear Cornelia,
I love all your books and have read Inkheart and Inkspell at least three times.I think they are brilliant! When I heard about the movie I freaked. I don't know if the roll has alraedy been cast, but I would really enjoy the part. I am 5'3, have natural bright blonde hair, and shining green eyes. You don't know how exited I would be if you replied to this. I have some acting back ground. I am just a young writer, drawer and actress, that needs to be brought out! Thanks!!!!
Dear Mrs.Funke,
My name is Lindsey and, unlike most of these other girls my appearance doesn't fit at all to the description of Meggie. I also do not have any acting experience but instead, a passion, a passion for books. Books that fill my head with dreams, dreams that I believe will never come but still, I dream. And the crazy thing is that I’m 15 years of age, most teens probably would have grown out of such a phase, but I love it. Reading books such as yours takes me to places that I could only imagine, to worlds that will never exist. But getting back to the point, do you think that I would have a chance at this part, as Meggie that is? Or a chance at any part for that matter.
Dear Cornelia Funke,
You are my favorite author in the enitre world. I read all of your books including Inkspell. I really loved Inkheart and Inkspell. They were the best books ever written.
Are you planning on writing another book? If you did I would be very happy.
I was wondering about the Movie that was being talked about in Inkspell. When is it coming out? I'd love to see it.
Your biggest fan,
Todd
Dear Cornelia
i just love your work!
Your an amazing stupendous fabulous writer!
i have read inkheart and inkspell many times over and over(i'm right in the middle of reading inkheart again for the 4th or 5th time) i just cant stop reading them they r so great (ppl ask if i get bored of them, but who could) and when i heard you were making a movie out of inkheart i was thrilled and cant wait to see it.
And even though i'm in australia i wold really like to play the part of meggie i've just turned 14 i've got sorta a redish brown hair(more brownish actually) and blue eyes. All my friends family teachers say i have a great reading voice(and singing voice if that helps) so yeh if you can come to australia for auditions i would be very grateful.
And could you please tell me when the 3rd book is coming out and when the inkheart movie is coming out thx.
And i really do mean it i LOVE! the inkheart triology. And all your other books.
well thats about it so can you reply asap thank you.
And kept up your fabulous writing :)
Dear Cornelia Funke

Posted by: kayla at May 7, 2006 06:54 PMMy Idol (^_^),
I loved reading the first book of Inkheart and, truthfully, I got a little choked up at the ending of Inkheart. THEN, there was the second book with Farid and Meggie's share of the book:That was amazing. It was incredibly emotional for me when I read the end of Inkspell. Dustfinger was my favorite...v_v Anyway, You left me at such suspense after Inkspell that I almost squeal everytime I hear ANYTHING about the books. Seriously...If you haven't found out yet, Inkheart's trilogy is one of the best things that's happened to me. I aim now to grow up as a writer for children because of you. I'm so excited also because I'm waiting for The Thief Lord Movie in the mail. I JUST found out that it was releasedlast month! I thought it was supposed to come out next year. Nevertheless, I loved your books and I really, REALLY want more!
(P.S. I am sooo sorry about your husband and I wish you well)
Dear Cornelia Funke
The first book I read from all your books was Dragon Rider which I loved sooooooooooooooo much. When I went to my school library I saw Inkheart. I was sorta drawn to the cover and when I saw it was written by you I borrowed it straight away!!!!
Now it has become my favourite book. I live in Australia but i was wondering if I could play the part of Meggie. I would also like to know if you could tell me where the auditions are and when. Also if you are going to tour around Austraila and when.
I know I am asking alot from my favourite author but please send an email to dminikin@vtown.com.au.
Right now I am reading The Thief Lord and are loving it as much as I loved Dragon Rider, Inkheart and Inkspell.
From your GREATEST fan
Monika

A lot of people have come up to me and said that I look like the describtion of Meggie, even people I don't know have said that.
It is true that I have no acting experience whatso ever, but If I could get just one audition that would make me the happiest person on earth, even if I don't get the part.
Please.
Just one audition, one chance, one minute, of the casting crews day is all I'm asking.
Please. E-mail me back.
When I read the book inkheart, my life changed. Becaues of you I am writing a book of my own.

Ms. Funke,
I've been scouring the internet since January trying to find out if there will be an open cast for the part of Meggie in inkheart. If there's even the slightest chance, can you tell me if there are any requirments? like a certain nationality or hair color? what about age? would there be a cutoff for that too? I'm 14, would that be too old? I've read both inkheart and inkspell. i couldn't put either down until I finished it. I got in trouble for reading in class a lot, an i still do. i love reading, and i can relate to Meggie on that part. please, I'd very much like a reply.
Meghan

Hi Ms. Funke,
I absoulotely LOVE your books they are so cool I would LOVE to play in the movies but I don't have much in common with any of the people except me and Maggie are the same age. But honestly I would play anyone just to be apart of it!I have light brown hair and I think Maggie has blonde so yah that probably wouldn't really fit the discription. If there are any open parts I would LOVE to play them even if I was a maid I don't care!
Hi Mrs. Funke,
I know you have gotten probably a million other emails like this and are probably sick and tired of reading them but please read just one more! I have read all your books that are out in the U.S. and I love them all. When I read Inkheart I really felt like Meggie and I were a lot alike. We both have a big passion for reading. My friend who is also a big fan of your books, especially Inkheart, told me that I would be a perfect Meggie and that Meggie reminds her of me. I am 12 years old(almost 13) but I am pretty short for my age. I only around 4'10" or 11" with straight blonde/brown hair and brown eyes. I have had a small amount of acting experience but I think I am a good actor and know I could play Meggie's role really well. I would love to have the chance to be Meggie. Please email me back. I would really like to get some information about trying out for the role. Thanks
Dear Mrs. Funke,
I know it sounds silly that I'm only 10 and I want to try out for the part of Meggie! But it may be a while before you start shooting the movie! I have had experience in several plays and I read all of the time. I love your character Meggie and I think I look just like her and am a lot like her too! I know I would be perfect for the part. I have been in plays at the Bucks County Playhouse and also school plays. This summer my mom and I will go to New York to audition for some plays or commercials. I really want to be an actor. Please let me when and where the auditions will be. I love both of your books and I can't wait for the third. Thanks.
Isabelle
I would love to try out for the part of Meggie! I am about 5ft,13 years old I have long blonde hair and blue eyes - I love reading as well, so I can identify with the character. Please keep me in mind! I have experience.
Anyway,
I would just like to ask why you write kid's books instead of adults - is there a particular reason?
Yours,
Catherine x

Posted by: kaitlyn at May 19, 2006 06:55 PMI just finished your Inkspell book today! I have to say, it was an awsome book! I cried when you-know-who died. He was my favorite charactor! I really hope you do a third book. I'm going to be reading The Theif Lord and Dragon Rider soon (I can't wait until I go back to the library). Your books are so good, even my best friend (who doesn't really like to read) is totally loving Inkheart, just after the first few chapters, so that means that you definatly have a way with words! I'd sort of like to play Meggie, but I don't look at all like I'd picture her and I'm REALLY shy, sometimes I can't even talk in front of new people. I also think I'm a better actress when I'm trying to be funny :D Someday, I hope to be a writer, just like you. I love books and I have tons of ideas for stories (I'm also REALLY dramatic) but I can't get them down on paper. I can't wait to see the movie and I wish you good luck on any further books you may have in mind!

Hello,
My name is Quinn and I was wondering about information for trying out for Meggie. I do not know if I am too late but I really hope not. I have very long brown hair and brown eyes. I am 12 years old. please contact me asap.
Sincerely,
Quinn
(P.S. I have never once not gotten a part I have tried out for {just a fun-fact})
Dear Cornelia,
My name is Opal and i am absolutely in LOVE with the books you have written! I have read The Theif Lord, Inkheart, Inkspell, and Dragon Rider. You are my favorite author and i think you are so inspiring, I am even trying to write a book... A few of my friends have read a little bit of it and they think i might have a future as a author.
I know you have probably seen about a million of these, but would you please reply to this one... I am in love with Inkheart and Inkspell and they are two of my favorite books, and i was wondering if there were going to be open auditions for the part of Meggie. I am 13 and am about 5 foot 2 and have shortish brown hair. I want to play this part becuase i am very passionate about reading and have read a lot of books, I will go to school with really thick books and my friend will go 'why do you punish yourself with such thick books?!' I have had little acting experience and i know chances are almost impossible for me to get this part but I would at least like to try out for this part if it is not to late! Please e-mail me if you could!
~Opal~

The last time I posted I did forget to put my e-mail adress. So sorry!
My Idol (^_^),
I loved reading the first book of Inkheart and, truthfully, I got a little choked up at the ending of Inkheart.

Ms Funke
I read Inkheart not long after it came out and loved it so much. I identify with her love for her father as my dad and i are close altho he spends a lot of time away from home.
I recently found that there is a movie being made and if u can give me any casting details i would be very grateful. Ive wanted to be in a movie for a long time now (secret ambition)lol.
I woould really be honored to play meggie as she is brave an loyal.
Cornelia Funke,
I first heard about this book when a teacher read Inkheart to me and I fell in love with it! Soon, I started reading the seconed book and loved it even more(Especially the love interest between Meggie and Farid!) I cried my eyes out when Dustfinger died for Farid, PLEASE let Dustfinger come back, I felt so bad for Farid when he promised Cheeseface to work for him so Dustfinger could come back.In the next book will you have more stuff happen to Elinor, she kind of just fell out of the story. I can't wait for the movie to come out, I know it will be a grammy winner!!!

Posted by: Amy at June 4, 2006 05:45 AMDear Ms. Cornelia Funke,
You are an outstandding writer! I have enjoyed your book Inkheart a lot, it is a very good alternative book since I am waiting desperatley for the seventh Harry Potter book. After finishing Inkheart I noticed many simularities between me and Meggie, first of all, we are both book fanatics! Second, we are both 12. Thirdly,we both have golden hair, and we are both brave. I was wondering if you could e-mail me at aharrypotterluvr@aol.com. I would like to know when auditions are held, and if there are any in the Carolina's ( North and South)
Hello,
I have read both Inkheart and InkSpell and they are both amazing! I heard that you are making a movie of the book and Meggie hasn't been assigned yet. I would love to play her, and yes, I have acted before. I am 5'2" and have brown hair that in the sun has blonde highlights. I know you are VERY busy, so if you can't respond, I understand. But, please if you could, just post where auditions will be. I think that will help a lot of girls like me. By the way, I am 13 and practically know Meggie inside out. Thank-You and can't wait for your next book, InkBlood.
And, If you can, please e-mail me at Punkym955@aol.com

I was just stunned...I loved this book sooo much. After my librarian suggested it to me, I couldnt put it down. My grades actually started to slip for that week. After finishing Inkheart, I soon checked out more of your books, The Theif Lord and Dragon Rider, but my favorite was still Inkheart. Our school this year, was holding a book club and Inkheart was one of the choices. When they passed it around, I was just flipping through it since I hadnt seen it in 2 years. I noticed in the back it talked about Inkspell. Right away, I checked it out at the library and since it came, i havent put it down yet. I only have about 50 pages left to read but my head hurts because I have been on the couch reading all day. I cant wait to finish it and I hope you come out with a 3rd book. I recomment your books to everyone I know. They are the most enchanting books I have ever read. I give you great credit for being such an awesome writer and I admire you soo much. Keep writing!
Posted by: Amanda at June 19, 2006 04:16 PMmy friend is a really big fan of yours and he asked me to read your books too. Now i just can't put them down!
we both love acting and when we heard that inkheart is getting made into a movie we just couldnt help getting a little overexcited! we tried to find the address to write to someone about the casting for meggie and we couldn't really find it anywhere. Can you pleasr write back to me and tell me to who i should write to.
Here are some things about me:
i'm 5'4-5'5, 12 years of age, and have black hair. i have acted in school plays when i was little and so has my friend we both enjoy acting very much and get along with anyone!
Thank you so much for your time and please write back to me, i'm really looking forewards to hearing from you!
Thank you so much.
Mrs. Funke:
I have recently finished reading both Inkheart and Inkspell. I adore the way you make the words come off the page and make pictures when I read them. I have heard you might make a movie of Inkheart and I hope if you do, you will get someone who will take their time with it. Many movies have been ruined that way and it would be bad if my favorite book had a bad movie.^_^ I have also wondered if being an extra in your movie would be possible.(Being Meggie would be awesome but too much competition). I have been in plays and love to act. I have dark brown hair past my sholders, brown eyes and I am about 5'2. I am 13 years old. I hope you contact me after reading this. ^_^ I found your book by pure chance. I was looking for a nice thick book and I saw a bright red spine and now I own both books as well as Dragon Rider and I am about to buy The Thief Lord. I hope you keep writing stories! They are truly amazing.
mrs.funke,
I heard(well when i read the back of inkspell) that you were making a movie,i would like to audition for the part of meggie,i have a lot of acting and singing experience,i have fair brown hair i am 11,soon to be 12,the age meggie was in the first book,i also love the books i have read every book you ever wrote!I love to read aloud,i got so wrapped up in you book that i almost trided to read into the book my self.I am 5 ,2" and i always thought Meggie would look like me.please contact me in some way(i love your work)

Hi!
I would love to get more information on the casting of Inkheart. I have previously read Inkheart, and I am almost finished with Inkspell, and I love them both! I would grately appreciate more casting information, for I would love to play a part in the movie. Please get back to me as soon as possible, I can't wait to hear from you!
Dear CF
I loved both your books Inkheart and Inkspell. I have read Inkheart 6 times and Inkspell 3. i loved inkheart and at the end of Inkspell, I cried. BRING DUSTFINGER BACK PLEASE!!!!
They both were great books, but I found both of their endings overwhelming and a little bit cut short.
Is it true that you are casting a movie on inkheart?
Great job on both books!

Good morning Mrs.Funke,
I'm sure you have received many letters asking for a chance to try out for the role of Meggie in Inkheart. They start off by telling you, that you are a great author, and that they love your books, that they sleep with it under their pillows. Knowing you have heard all this already let me get straight to the point. My name is in real life Meagan Elizabeth. I am 5'9, thin, and 15 years of age. I have dark brown hair, and hazel eyes. In the past I have been in school plays, and have performed a difficult monologue called "Patter for the Floating lady" by Steve Martin, and many others in front of a large audience. Lets just say I am experienced. I won't let you down. I will come to all the auditions and be very dedicated to trying my best.
Vielen Dank für Ihre Zeit. Sie wissen, wie mich zu erreichen.

Dear Mrs.Funke,
I love reading Inkheart and Inkspell. I got to pick a free book at the library once and picked Inkheart. Then I started reading a different book. Then my teacher started reading it so I started reading it too. Ever since then I've been hooked on it. I finished it and started reading Inkspell. I am almost finished. Do you know a website or something that can give more information about book 3 Inkdeath? please write back to Tobyfan0924@aol.com.
From,your fan,

i read your book and i loved it so much, i read it during my english lessons at school which got me into trouble quite often but i simply could not put the book down because i enjoyed it so much, i even went and got it again from the local library and kept it out for a long time. i have read it about five times and i stil love it. i can't wait to read the second book inkspell.
Cornelia Funke,
I loved reading InkHeart and InkSpell. While i was reading them i was in a complete different world. The choice of words used to describe many of the characters lead me to imagining for a great deal of time. In the end of InkSpell though, I cried when Dustfinger died. Even thought he was a bit selfish in the first book, he was very thoughtful and generous towards Meggie's feelings with Farid. When i found out that there was no third book yet, I (believe it or not) almost cried. I thought that was the end of the story...leaving so many questions unanswered but than i found out you are writing a third one. I just want to thank you for writing books for children, I love them. I can't wait till the movie. Oh, by the way when and where do the auditions start for Meggie and Farid? (I think i might know someone for him, Farid)

Dear Mrs. Funke,
I have just finished reading the book Inkheart and Inkspell, and they were the 2 best books I ever read! You brought in so much life into the pages I felt like I was really there!I was just wondering if there would be auditions for the part "Meggie" since Inkheart will soon become a major motion picture? If there is I would really love to try out.I am 10 years old, I'm about 4'9", I have chocolate brown eyes, and the same color hair. I've taken 4 acting camps, and a little bit of drama in school.

Dear Mrs. Funke
My name is Jennifer Barrie, I am twelve years old and I would really lik to try out for the part of Meggie. I have been surfing the net and have found no evidence that the part has already been filled.
The reason I would like to try out for Meggie is not just because I love the books but because when I read them I feel so connected to Meggie and found myself weeping as she was when her father had gone to Capricorn's village. I have done acting before and have an agent (Live and Loud). I haven't been able to think about anything else for a little bit now andam desperatly hoping that I would fill the part of a perfect Meggie.

Dear Mrs. Funke
I am very sorry to bother you yet again but just incase you were interested, I forget to tell you what I look like. I have blue eyes and sometimes wavy, sometimes straight, darksih blonde hair (more kind of mousy brown). Thanks again so much for all your time.

Dear Mrs.Funk
I really don't know what to say because you might not read this. Well I've read Dragon Rider, Inkheart and Inkspell. They were great. I heard that there was going to be a 3rd book to Inkheart call Inkdeath. If it is really going to come out I hope it will be as good as the other two. Also about the movie Inkheart. I haven't seen or heard of it coming out, well only on the Internet. I hope that they won't add anything to the movie or take out things.
As you can see my name is Maggie so after reading Inheart and Inkspell I accidental started to spell my name as Meggie. I still do sometimes but not as much.
Well if you read this thanks for your time.

Dear Mrs. Funke,
I don't know if you really read these, or if this is just a site trying to get my email and name, but if you do read it, I'd like to tell you that if ever, I would be able to go into a book, it'd be your book Inkheart I'd go into. Ever since I was little I've read as many books as I can get my hands on, but I've never read one as great as yours (and that's saying a lot). It'll make a fantastic movie. I've always wanted to be in a great fantasy book made into a movie, like Lord of the Rings, Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time, The Never-Ending story, and I'd love to be in it, but my folks and I are rather poor and we haven't the money to send me anywhere for auditions. Well, I just wanted to let you know that I think you're books are great. I know this is probably a lot to ask of a great author like you, but could you email me and give me some hints on writing? I've written tons of stories, but I haven't the slightest idea if they're good or not. I never let anyone read them. I've read so many books, I'm always afraid that if I ever did get a book published, I'd have plagiarized someone, somewhere. I've said too much already, and you probably won't even get this far into my email with all the fan mail you get, but if you do, please email me.
Your friend,
Brianna
hi!
i loved your book inkheart, it was probabaly the best book i was able to finish. Most books that i have read wasn't completed because i found it boring but inkheart was great all the way through. Im also writing my own fantasy story, inspired from you.Reading all the other messages surprised me. Are you really making inkheart into a film?! that would be great!!!! please let a really good- looking guy play dustfinger.

Hello,
I read both of your books and I now hear that there is a movie coming out. I would really like to audition for the part of Meggie, but I need more info. I am about 5', I have brown hair, blue eyes, and I am 13 years old. I do have experience when it comes to doing school/church plays, but I have not done anything big yet and I would like to have my chance. If you have any info on Meggie audtions please let me know.

Dear Mrs. Funke,
My name is Isabella Egizi. I have read your book the Theif Lord and Inkheart.I enjoyed them so much, I got all my best friends reading it! I have not read Inkspell yet but I got it as a present so as soon as I finish reading all my other books, I will go for that one!Because now after Inkheart, I feel like I'm friends with Meggie. I feel like I am Mo and I read her out of the book, or maybe read me into it!That is what I love about the way you write! Your books are so exciting, and I get so excited because I start caring and actually building relationships with the characters more and more! So thank you for putting your great talent out there!
I heard there is now going to be a movie of Inkheart and I thought if it wasn't already cast you could give me some information on how I could possibly audition for Meggie. I have always wanted to be an actress. Since I was a baby I have dressed up and performed. I was in a school play just this last year that entered a drama festival and we won 11 awards, the most awards in the theater we performed in!I often imagined myself playing the role of Meggie as soon as I read that the book was going to be a movie! I would pretend that I was acting with all my favorite actors! I don't know if I am just trying to live a childhood dream and will never reach the top, or if I really could make it. I guess anything is possible if you try hard enough! So that's why I am doing this right now! I'm writing this for my passion for acting!(Did that sound cheesy?)Anyway, now for the discription;I have dark brown hair, brown eyes, and freckles.(Which are a little off topic.)I'm 11 1/2 years of age, and I am in seventh grade. People say I'm kind of young for my grade but where I started school(Sante Fe, New Mexico), the deadline was different, and as I kept moving, I didn't need to stay back a year at my new schools just because of age. So if you were wondering, that's why I am sort of out of the range of seventh grade. Well, everyone else says that anyway. Please e-mail me as soon as possible, I know you have alot of other people to look at that are probably much more well known than me! But I would scoop this chance right up if it was offered to me! Well thank you! Toodle-oo & Ta-Ta!
P.S. My e-mail is MissBellaBee9@yahoo.com Of course I will understand if you can't reply, you are probably so busy!I know there are thousands of kids trying out for this part. But if you could post a reply here for all of us, that would be great! Thanks!
Dear Cornelia Funke,
Hello, you don't know me, but I'm one of your many fans. I've read Inkheart, and it's sequel, Inkspell. I, like so many other people, heard that your book is being made into a Major Motion Picture. I would like to try-out for a part. I would really enjoy being Meggie, but I wouldn't mind a different part in the movie. Could you please, if you have any spare time, e-mail me when and where you're going to be having the castings for the movie? Thanks.
Your Fan,
Jillian Hazlitt
Hello my name is Marley. I love Inkheart. I think it's an awesome book. I heard it was going to be a movie and I immediantly imagined myself being Meggie. I adore her character and we have lots of simalartities. If you don't have anyone to play Meggie, I would love to play her. I've always wanted to be an actress. I've been in Drama Kids for 2 years and I think I'm a good actor. So please consider this!!! Thanks
Marley
Hey Mrs. Funke. Marley again. I forgot to write a little more stuff about me. I'm 11 years old but everyone tells me I look older. Like 12. So I'd look like a pretty good 12 year old. Oh and I have big brown eyes and dirty blond sort of long hair. And I'm about 58 inches tall. So thats me! Mrs. Funke, if it's not too late, could I please be Meggie? Thanks! (P.S: I'm reading Inkspell right now. It's really good! I was reading the other comments and saw that Dustfinger's going to die! I was sort of thinking that, but I don't want him to die! Well, maybe you can make him come back alive again in Inkdeath!) Marley

Hi Mrs. Funke
I'm sorry to bother you, but I just recently finished Inkheart and Inkspell. I know you've probably heard this a thousand times, but I would really like info on the casting for Meggie. I was amazed by how well your books were written and I think that I could resemble Meggie really well. I turning 12 in less than two weeks. I have fair brown hair with a little bit of blonde and a tiny hint of red. I have long hair, freckles, and am rather thin. I'm also about 4'9''-4'10''. I'm begging you to send me information on the tryouts for Meggie. I know I could do well. I have acted in plays for church and have been to acting camp. I've heard on other websites that Meggie has not been casted yet and that other people I've heard from are hoping for an unknown actress for Meggie. (Just a thought). I also have a nice voice (if that helps) and I am not a girly girl. I love books and acting. I've wanted to try out for roles in other books, but none had parts right for me. Meggie just fits me perfectly. I'll do whatever it takes. All I need is one chance.
Posted by: Rachel at July 23, 2006 11:37 PMDear Cornelia,
Were to start? I have so much to say! Well, being that this is a fan entry; you probably already got the impression that I am one of you fans. Well, I am a Funke fan and proud to say so! I am sure people tell you all the time that they are your biggest fan. In fact I’m sure you get “Really, I am you biggest fan, even though people tell you that all the time!” a lot too, just as I was originally going to say. After thinking over, I’ve decided not to say that, but to say that you are my favorite author, which is saying a lot because I read very often. Out of every book that I ever read, all the pages of printed parchment, all the paragraphs, sentences, and words, you come out on top. I could say that the reason you came on top is because of the way you do this, or the way you do that, but, honestly, I don’t have an explanation of why I like your writing so much. I have gotten many, many, people to read your books, and have many funny, bizarre Cornelia Funke book stories. I love your books. I am patiently (well, as patently as possible) awaiting Inkdawn, your third book, and of course, like many of your other fans, awaiting the Inkheart move. By the way, I loved The Thief Lord movie. I think it would be a very worthwhile experience to go to the September 2 Meggie auditions that will be held in England. I fit Meggie’s description, I have dirty blond hair and hazel eyes, but I didn’t really picture myself as Meggie, and although I been in many plays, I think Inkheart deserves a better actress than myself. If I do go to the auditions, it will be to meet other Funke Fans and maybe perhaps you. PS. Please cast the Inkheart movie wisely. I love your books! I love your books! I love your books! I love Inkheart! I memorized the first page. Inkheart Forever.
My name is deisha and I have reacently turned eleven. I really want to try out for Meggie but I have found it hard to find things about the auditions. I know Meggie is twelve but almost everyone says that I look older then I really am. I love your books and am currently reading the second book Inkspell and I think it is wonderful! Please write to me about audition at Deisha10@hotmail.com as I really would like to try out. We should let any people audition so we can get some new stars on the road.

It's Sarah from Pennsylvania again. IF YOU ARE INTRESTED IN PLAYING MEGGIE GO TO http://www.corneliafunke.de/en/news/news-63.html, which by the way is run by Insa, Cornelia's sister. All I know is that the Meggie aditions start on September 2 in England. Well, just go to the link for yourself and keep going there for news. Maybe you could and write in the guestbook, that's what I do all the time (right now the guestbook will be offline untill August 14,because Insa is taking a break, and she deserves it) .I find it to be the best Funke site out there. By the way, there is chats every so often, and would be great if more people came. It would be a great idea to skim the guestbbok entries to find out a lot of stuff.
Sorry, that link doesn't work. IF YOU ARE INTRESTED IN PLAYING MEGGIE GO TO http://www.corneliafunke.de/en/index.html (not the one above) then go to where it says "news" and then click on "Official casting for Meggie starts on 2 September!!!" Again Sorry.
Posted by: Sarah at July 31, 2006 08:06 PMHi, I'm Sam and I'm also very interested in trying out for the part of Meggie. The link above is in German though and I can only speak English. I'd really really apprecaite it if you could post an English link.
Thanks.
P.S. I'm a huge fan and I have the characteristics Meggie has in the books.
Hi, My name is Kira, I'm 13 yrs old and i'll turn 14 August 7th.But I look younger than I am. Well, I absolutely LOVE Inkheart, and I just got finished reading Inkspell, I can't wait for the next one! Great job on the books Cornelia! I absolutely LOVE them! I love to read as well.
Meggie is my favorite charater out of the book. Farid and Meggie make a great couple! So cute.
Bye!
Hello Mrs. Funke,
I'm Elizabeth Ash and I would love to be a part of the movie coming out.I don't care if I'm a maid or even, if I'm extremly lucky, Meggie. I have dirty blonde hair and light blue eyes. I don't have much acting experience but none the less I would love to try out. The only language I speak is English, just in case you wanted to know. If you could email me I would be extremly grateful.
Thanks!
P.S. I absolutly love Inkheart, Inkspell and the Thief Lord!!
Dear Mrs.Funke
When did the additions end for Meggie? If they haven't ended yet I would like to addition. I'm 12 and 5 ft. I have brown eyes and almost brown hair. Could you email me asap with your reply? I have never read a better book than Inkheart. I just got done reading inkspell the same day I wrote this. It was a wonderful book. I can't wait till the third book comes out! By the way I don't really care what part I can get but I really would like to be Meggie if at all possible.
P.S. I also loved the book The Thief Lord. That's how I found out about Inkheart.
Posted by: Brenna Holmes at August 4, 2006 03:24 PMDear Mrs.Funke,
I may not be able to addition. I live in America. If at all possible I know this would be hard but could you hold additions in America?
Thanks. I also posted another one earlier if you would like to read that one first.
Dear Sam:
The link I posted was in English to my knowledge; I too only speak English. Again, the website is http://www.corneliafunke.de/en/index.html but if for some reason the site's home page comes up German for you, just click on the red, white, and blue English flag at the bottom of the home page. Then the English cite should come up and you can click "News" and then "Official casting for Meggie starts on 2 September!!!" Just in case that does not work, I have copied and pasted what it says:
"Official casting for Meggie starts on 2 September!!!
Dear Inkheart fans!
Finally news!!! The official casting for Meggie will start on 2 September in England. Time and place will be announced soon. If English is your first language and you are between 11 and 13, come to audition!"
I posted the link because I thought that you would like to see for yourself and maybe go through the cite. And also that way you can check to see when the news is up-dated. Just to tell you a few things about the cite, it is run by Insa (Cornelia's sister), it has a guestbook where you can ask Insa a question or search the archives for info (the guestbook will be off-line until August 14), there are chats now and then between Cornelia’s fans (Insa said she would like more people to attended the chats), a why section full of basic Q's and A's, a film and theater section, a pictures section (in the picture section there are pictures of Liguria - the setting of Cornelia’s book Inkheart), and so on. Oh by the way, in the passage of news on Meggie auditions, it says ages 11-13, in the guestbook, and I don't know if this is official, Insa says if you LOOK like you could be 11-13 you could come to the auditions. Good luck to all who audition- break a leg! Inkheart Forever!
Dear Mrs.Funke,

Inkheart and Inkspell are my favourite books in the entire universe - i couldn't put them down! I could really feel the fear in which the characters were going through as it was expressed so well in the books. I would love to play Meggie. I have no proffesional acting experience although i have been in two school plays, Grease and A Midsummer Nights Dream. I also played a role of an uncle in a variety show! Meggie is probably my favourite character because she is so brave, surrounded by people who love her, and yet she is so scared, but never shows it. She is impossible to not love! I know you would prefer somebody aged 11-13 but i am 14, although i am short for my age, and everybody thinks i am about 12! I am fun and friendly, and have confidence. Um everybody seems to be putting their descriptions here! hehe! So i have dirty blond hair - medium to long in length, blue eyes...
Please email back! Helen xxxx
i love your books there AWSOME i love them!!!!! i just fiished reading inkspell... i cried when dustfinger gave up his life for his friend... i was so sad that it didnt tell if he was going to live ...so what is the next book i am diying to knowwhat is the next book coming out??? and whats the title..please hurry so i can know what will happen!!! e me!!! victoria
Posted by: victoria at August 8, 2006 07:10 PMDear Ms. Funke,
I have read all your books, Starting with InkHeart, then InkSpell, Dragon Rider, and when I saw The Theif Lord comercial I grabbed the book from my bedside table and barely ate the whole weekend before I finished.
Anyway. I look a bit like Meggie, though I'm relitivly short.
I'm turning 12 in 15 days, I have dirty bloond, but it's usually regular blonde, I have ocean blue eyes, (sadly they do not look like little peices of the sky) I'm 4'10"-5'.
I know that the chances are literally 8,352 to 1, but even if i got an audition it would be amazing.
I was in Annie (Molly's understudy)
The wizard of oz (monkey, lullaby leager, and ozian)
Oliver (Fagin's "Gang")
The Miricle Worker (Martha: the servant who has a set of lines)
To Kill a Mocking Bird (Extra, Scout's understudy, called back for Scout)
all at a small comunity theater.
My middle school
Bye Bye Birdie (chorus)
Almost all of them are Musicals, i know. But I'm pretty good actress. And I can sometimes make myself cry. If I play in my mind "Wind Beneath my wings" and think of by little brother.
anyway, please e-mail me for the location and time of auditions for InkHeart in America. (I can do a British accent)
As u can see I am desperate. but you know... do you????

I understand that you are very busy, and I know that a dont really fit the profile you described as Meggie, But I would really appreciate it if you took the time to email me back. Im 5'2 and 14 years old. Unfortunately i don't really look my age, but I guess that now it is a good thing. I have the palest skin you might ever see (even the light 1 foundation doesnt match) and dark brown hair. Once again I realize I do not fit the description of meggie, but even if I could be like a foot in the backround it would make me happy. I loved the book and being involved in this movie would be a great honor.
Thankyou for your time.

My name is Carly Barton and I'm 15 years old; I have read your book once and am currently reading the second. (Inkspell) I loved your book so much because you put so much thought and detail into it. I couldn't stop reading it until I finished; and when I did finish it, I was sad it was over... so I started reading it again. I enjoyed the book so much that I did a book report on it for school (which got me an A by the way). I was so impressed with the book, and I always recomend it to people when I can. I loved this book so much, and thought it was better than all six Harry Potter books! I didn't know if there was going to be a second book, so I didn't give up my hopes; but when I found out there was one, I was completeley ecstatic! I just got the book, so I'm only on chapter four, but man is it good! I thought to myself, if only a movie were to be made... suprise! Wow, this just gets better everyday! I was wondering where the movie was going to be made, because it would be a dream come true if they held some auditions in Calgary Canada, cause thats where I'm from. I've always wanted to act in a movie, and I've been memorizing scripts since I was three. I've been in a few school plays, went to a creative arts school for three years, and I've also done drama camp over the summer. I have a portfolio of head shots and modeling pictures that I've done as well. I know I sound like all the other girls who want to try out for Meggie, and you might think I'm too old as well. I may be 15, but I've been mistaken for 12; I even get childrens menus in restraunts sometimes. I am a very committed and hard working person, and getting to be in a movie like this would just be absolutely amazing. I may not look identical to Meggie, but I'm pretty close. I know I can do a good job if you give me the chance. Please let me know what you can do, because this would honestly be the best thing that ever happened to me. My email adress is elwyna12@hotmail.com just in case you make a decision. Thank you for your time and patience reading this letter, and I hope you can get back to me, if not, it's been a pleasure writing to you and good luck with your novel writing.

I would like to play Meggie in the movie but I don't think I could because I would never be able to go to England in time with going be=ack to school and all but I wanted to writeb to you anyway because I loved your books. I am german so I am goinng to read your books in german as well.
Hello Mrs. Funke,
I read your books Inkheart and Inkspell as soon as they came out since those precious and enjoyable days I have re-read the book countless times over and over again. As soon as I found out about the major motion picture it is all I have been able to think about since. I know you will probably want a more experienced actress for the roll of meggie but I would love to try out for the part anyway for a chance to be able to live the books and slip into the skin of Meggie for real as I have done so so many times in my imagination before. I know in my heart of hearts this roll would be my dream come true, it always gives me such a thrill to act in front of people. I know my chances of actually getting the part are slim but if you could please give word to me of the time needs and whereabouts of the audition I will be forever thankful. My e-mail adress is dcproberts@callnetuk.com.
Your biggest fan,

Hi Cornelia! I don't actually know if you will even get round to reading this since you are probably v.busy right now (writing inkdeath!)but i just wanted to say that i love your books, they kind of take me away from reality and drag me deep into the magical world you've created. One time i was so engrossed in Inkspell that my sister asked me something three times before i even remembered where i was and realised she was speaking to me! I love reading and writing and i want to do loads of stuff with my life when i grow up. I plan to write books and for my words to be remembered long after i've gone-just as yours will be. I would love to audition for the part of Meggie if open auditions were held but i'm probably much to old looking (i'm just fourteen and i'm 5ft 8!) plus i have dark brown hair and hazel eyes instead of blonde hair so i wouldn't really fit the part. However, i wish you the best of luck with writing Inkspell and i wish all the film crew luck with making the movie (which i am DEFINETLEY going to go and see!)
xxx :D
Hallo Cornelia!

Including a headshot and cv would be very helpful. It should go to the following address:

Dear Mrs. Cornelia Funke,
My name is Erica and I love your books (especially Inkheart). I have read almost all of your books (at least more than twice. I have been a very big fan of your books ever since I first read Inkheart. My favorite hobbies in the world are reading, writing, and acting. In fact, I am writing my own story about a girl named Krista that discovers that her and her family are witches and warlocks. I was hoping that you could give me some tips to help my story sound more perfessional. Even though one of my dreams is to be a famous author like you, my biggest dream is to become an actress. When me and my cousin first read Inkheart, we started acting out all of the scenes from the book (we had to take turns being Meggie). And whenever I read the book to myself, I always pretended that I was Meggie. Today when I googled the book, something popped up that said auditions for Meggie are going to be September 9. I told everybody I know about it and now me and my friends are going to send in an audition tape. I'm sure by now you are sick and tired of girls saying that they would be perfect for the role, but I think that I would make a great Meggie. I am like her in so many ways, my friends even pointed out the resemblence: I love to read, i will do anything to save people that I love, I like to know what's going on, my father is my role model and friend as well as a parent, and I like adventure. I have some acting experience from acting camp and plays but I never really got my big break. It would mean a lot to me if you would write back saying good luck! My email address is mazzone5@comcast.net.
Dear Mrs. Funke,
Are there any other auditions for maggie in the United States Of America. I really want to be Maggie because i am so much like her. Sometimes i wish i could go inside a book if you know what i mean
From your biggest fan,

Hi! I was wondering if I could send a tape to England as an audition for Meggie. Is there any auditions in the U.S. too?
From Meggie
I forgot to say in my last entry how much I love your books. I wish i could go right into them I've read most of them. I love them all.

And another question Inkheart is coming out in motion picture im sooo excited to see what i imagined in the book is really what i expected in a movie! Around when is the movie actually going to come out?
Oh and about Playing the part of meggie i would really appriciate it if you could giveme some more information about that. Thank you so much.

Dear Mrs. Funke,
Hello. My name is Gretchen Midgley and I'm twelve (almost thirteen!) years old. My father and I read Inkheart aloud together (shh, don't tell!) and both loved it! I am very excited about Inkheart coming out as a movie! My dream would be to play Meggie! Okay, I know you get enough of that anyway. I was just wondering if you could e-mail me and notify me about auditions if you have the time and if there will be any. I have done school plays since pre-school and will soon be in "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens. I take Drama as an elective at school. I would really appreciate it if you could e-mail me back whether or not it's about auditions! However, I know you are busy. Here's some quick info: I have brown hair, hazel/golden eyes, and freckles. I am American but can do a variety of authentic accents including British. I am 5' tall and way 95 pounds. Please e-mail me if you have the chance at little_miss_dictionary@yahoo.com. Please exuse me if I sound brusk or forward or rude! I'm just so excited and I'm your biggest fan! Thank you.
Gretchen Midgley, Actress
Mrs. Funke,
I am so happy about your books, Inkheart, and your new one, Inkspell. They are the most spectacular books I have ever seen, and I (as every other girl) wishes to become the magical Meggie that has enchanted even the highest hopes.
I am extremely bookish, 11, "5, 2," and have done 3 school plays, 3 auditions, and can memorize faster than a cheetah may run, except I get nervous on theatre. I am Italian and German, have long brown hair, bangs, and am a very good, easy-going, fun cooperater. I would dearly love to play Meggie, since I have a secret hidden acting ability that I hope to show, and I hope that somebody notes me for an audition for Inkheart!
Mia, Best Actress of the Bunch
I loved Inkheart when I read it, and when I found out there were to be auditions for the part of Meggie I was desperate to go; until just recently I was informed that they were holding private auditions. My friend told me she had an audition, and proceeded to nearly forget the title and then asked me what the main character was like, as she has never read the book. Oh well, I still think you're an excellent author; please write a role in a story for a dark-haired girl!

Right, hate to crush everyones 'dreams' and that lot, but the auditions have been and gone! Hear me?
BEEN AND GONE!!!!!
Right, well then, now that's done.
I loved Inkheart and Inkspell, and can't wait 'till Inkdwan/Inkdeath comes out!
You are a fantastic author, and I hope you write many more classic books!( as I'm sure, in years to come, your books will become classics!)
Thank-you,
Lou-Lou
P.S Can no-one on this site spell? And you want to play a reading fanatic (who has to be clever) I mean, c'mon!
Dear Mrs. Funke,
Are auditions really over? I'm so sad to hear so, I was looking everywhere for info on how I could try out for Meggie. I love your books so much. I just read INKSPELL again, and have just stopped crying. I can't beleive that Dustfinger died. I guess that after 1200 pages, I kind of got attached to him. Oh, I'm gonna start crying again just typing this. I have to say, even thought everybody in your books says Death is final, I do hope that that's not the last we will hear of Dustfinger. I really love him. And even if you can't bring him back to life, maybe he could contact us just one more time (maybe in the form of smoke or something of that mysterious type, he would have liked that i think). Think about it, his last spoken words were "now off with you". Is'nt that sad?
I hope you take this into consideration, though you probably already have the perfect thing planned. I am looking forward to reading more. I Love your work.
Yours truly,
Kayla Louis
Merde....way to spoil the ending, people :(
Posted by: KittyKat at September 18, 2006 02:26 PMDear Cornelia Funke, Hey! Wow, I cannot believe I'm acctually talking to you. You are my inpiration. I am currently writing a book called "The Year of the Fairies" and it's turning out to be really good, but i would not have had my start had I not read any of your books. I'm a total book worm when it comes to fantasy. But I also have another side of me, the side that gets up on stage and jumps and screams sends energy in every direction. You are by far the best writer I know so far, and that's a compliment, belive me! Oh, and I was interested in hearing that the part of Meggie in the new feature film, based on your story Inkheart, was perhaps still open. If so, I would adore the chance to audition. A little about me: I'm 16 years old, 5'4", (ik, short for my age), I have long blonde hair and bright blue eyes. I could die happy if i only even got to talk to you. lol, Thank you so much for your time! And I hope to hear from you! Visit my myspace to find more about me, thank you again! Au revoir!

Dear Mrs. Funke,
I have read both InkJeart and Inkspell and I loved them. I have been thinking about trying out for Farid. I am white and pretty, tall and skinny. I can make a pretty good accent of Farid and I was hopeing that you would be able to tell me where the location for the Farid tryouts and when.

I forgot to say that I spkoe English and I was just wondering if that was OK. I know you write in German but that does not matter cause in English or Spanish or what ever I still think your one of the top 10 writers in my list and the way you make Fayid and Meggie slowly come together then they are more then friends and the drama. I would love to be in it evven though there has been countless boys who still say that to.

My name is Ravina Dhaliwal, I live in Delta,B.C Canada. I have recently read all of your books and they have been enchanting. This morning I had finished reading Inkspell and I cried during chapter 71 because Farid had died. I haven't read anything quite like it,with so many cliff hangers, terrors and joys. I often work as a backround extra in Vancouver. I would really love to be in your movie " Inkheart". My hobbies are reading, writing, snowboarding, and art I also enjoy playing my guitar. I am in the seventh grade in a late french immersion school. Would really do anything to be in your movie and would really appreciate it if you would take this into appreciation. I will also send my letter through snail mail and enclose a picture, thank you for your time.
Sincerely yours
Ravina
Are there going to be auditions in America? I was just asking my parents if I could take an acting class in Europe to be able to try out for Inkheart. It was worth a try! I know you hear this alot, so I'm not going to say much about it. I have long dark blond hair and hazel eyes and a fair complexion in case that matters. I've now read about Dustfinger and *insert other dieing persons name here so as not to spoil it* and i havent even read inkspell! i am so sad that I now know. Please tell me if there are going to be any and where they will be and if theyve already passed.

i love, love, love ur books, i would have loved to play meggie in the movie for inkheart, but i live in the usa, i have dark hair and skin (don't really match the describtion of meggie)but i have read inkspell and inkheart 4 times. it would have been a dream come true
Hi Ms.Funke,
Its me Ravina again, as I had said I live in Canada and i no that you probably think of me as "just another girl who wants to be in my new movie". But I really really have a passion and all i can think about is being in this movie. It would be a dream come true. Although I dont exacltey match the description of Meggie i would really like to try out at least. I love to read and since i finishes inkspell I havent been able to read anything else. Ialso love to draw and i copy the drawingsout of your books and poeple are always telling me that i should be one of your illustrators. Even if you could get me into justa backround in your movie i would be truly gratefull and this would be a HUGE dream come true....My parents are always teasing me how if i ever got a big part in a movie that they would have to homeschool me and I always reply "no, no ,no I love school and wouldnt get homeschooled even if i got a part in a movie" well I told my parents the day i stayed home to do all my research on you and your books that i would love to do homeschooling if it meant having a part in your movie. Pease e-mail me back at softie_sylvester@hotmail.com i would appreciate it also if you could please tell me the adress that i could send you my letters to. Thank you sooo much.
From Ravina

I just love your book. My letter may seem pretty little compared to about 1,000 others. Your book, Inkheart is amazing. Even though i haven't read the sequel I plan on it. I have brown hair and about 11 years old. I would love to be Meggie if there were auditions. I love to act and can even fake cry or laugh. I wish that i could be Meggie because i feel like i know her because of how you described her in the book. I love the adventures and fantasy kind of books. Don't stop writing and let me know if Auditions are open.
