Ensuring Sustainability: Monday 4/28/08

Yesterday we saw three groups present on two different goals for our Millennium Term project. One in particular that caught my attention was one of the groups that presented on Ensuring Environmental Sustainability. What I found most interesting was how they approached this particular goal. They didn’t specifically zone in to one architect or one organization; they looked at the big picture. What they did was that they looked at sustainability as a whole and narrowed it down to air pollution, water sanitation, energy, and forestry and wood. From there they went on to describe why we need to bring sustainability to these things , how some of these industries were going about it and finally a synthesis of what these industries were doing and what they could do better to promote a more sustainable environment.
To be a little more specific I think it would of made their presentation a lot better if they did all that, but had chosen a specific organization or architect that was working with their goal. Over all their documentation of this goal was very well and I was impressed at how well they put everything together.

A turn for the WORST or for the BEST?

As we are now getting right into the swing of things with our term project, it is only reasonable to ask how exactly we are going to put our presentations together.
The first presentation ideas that came to my mind that I believe would fully and exemplify what our term project ,in regard to Sustainability in Pune India, was all about were the following…
Video

Incorporating a video would be a nice way to illustrate the organization and Architect that we are working with in out term project. A video would thus inform our audience of who, what, where our term project is targeted at and why we decided on this particular location.
Background knowledge
pune5.jpg
Besides having a video that depicts what we are all going to talk about, it would be also be beneficial to give some local statistics on the community slums we are researching about as well as information regarding Pratima Joshi, who is the Architect that is working to promote a more sustainable environment in India. It would also be advantageous to our peers and our T.A. that we provide information about the organization, Shelter Associations, Pratima Joshi works with in India. The Shelter Association is a unique organization that works in Pune, India comprising Architects, Social workers, GIS Experts and Community Workers.
Flip Charts
flipchart.png
It would also be beneficial to add information such as the GIS to demonstrate how important this tool is in the reinterpretation of Prune slums. With GIS, Pratima has created a spatially-organized slum database that is critical to effective urban planning and the development of public infrastructure servicing the slums. With this said, it is evident that the GIS is an important tool used as a part of this reinterpretation of slums and therefore needs to have a place within our presentation.
PowerPoint
pp.png
With the accumulating information that we’ve been gathering it would be extremely effective to have our presentation in and orderly manner. Using a power point would be efficient and less costly to have a nicely organized presentation. A PowerPoint would effectively demonstrate all the information onto one screen so that our audience will be able to view and oppose and questions if needed.
Portfolio
And last but not least, I would think that it would important to summarize everything into a nice, organized, and creative manner. Thus a portfolio would be a great way to show how much effort we’ve put into our term project over the course of the last past weeks. It also gives our group a chance to turn in a tangible term project whereas just handing a PowerPoint or just various flipcharts will not obviously be sufficient enough.

With this all said, I think that if we incorporate all these important keys concepts and ideas into our presentation, that we will be successful in our term project.

WHO WOULD YOU BE?

Blog 5: " Explore through image and text how the built environment affects ( support of distracts) who you are. Speculate in terms of frameworks, clockworks, phenomena, and oppositions."
When I first read this blog the first things that came into my mind where…
Family
Friends
Weather

In the essence, these things are some of the things in my “built environment that I believe have an effect on who I am and what I stand for.
Let me elaborate by going down the list.
FAMILY
bren 224.JPG
The word “Family and is incorporated into my built environment in many ways. When thinking of the word family, I would like to categorize it in the physical realm as phenomena. The reason why I would say that family to me is a phenomena is because a family in general always exhibits behavior characteristics. For example, stability, and self restoration and at the same time ones family can also be unstable and chaotic while simultaneously spiraling and converging in many ways. For me, my family has impacted me in those ways which is why I would categorize family as phenomena.
FRIENDS
bren 003.JPG
Friends. This word, for me, constitutes the principle of clockworks in the physical realm. Clockworks are frameworks in which a fixed number of things start with a given set of mutual things that go through changes in a periodic manner and keep returning to the original set. In a way, a group of friends may effect who you are, how you act, and why you are the way you are. Friends go through changes as do any other kind of relationships, and change. But in the end the friends that you are closest to are the ones that keep returning. In this manner I can say that friends are like clockworks.

AND LAST,BUT NOT LEAST

WEATHER
cloudy.bmp
When i was thinking about how the built environment and how it affects who I am, I realized that the weather plays a major role into the physical realm. In regards to weather and climate, i think that weather falls into the category of phenomena in a variety of ways that affects who I am. I think it's appropriate to categorize weather in the idea of phenomena because phenomena is described as something that has origins, marked beginings, long term effects, has duration, exhibits change and can be modeled to various degrees. As you all can see that weather plays a role in all of these situations, but especially in the of how it affects who I am. For instance when the weather outside is particularly couldy and cold, it doesn't give me much inspiration to really go out and enjoy my surroundings. On the other hand, a sunny day usually makes me feel in many ways inspired to go out and get things done within my physical environment.
024.JPG
As you can see through my three examples, the ideas of phenomena, clockworks and frameworks have an impact into the physcial realm of who I am. Not only do i think that these ideas have an impact on my life, but i think its also an important aspect in a lot of people lives. Think about it. Who would you be with out Friends, Family and the Weather?

EXPLORING

When first proposed with this blog, I found it difficult to imagine what exactly I would do architecturally, artistically lyrically and so on in our society that would have am impact on my environment. It’s hard to imagine a place here on Earth that would allow me to do whatever I want in regards of using my imagination in architecture. I guess iI will have to see where my imagination takes me.

In the true essence of what I have learned and absorbed in my classes involving architecture I have noticed the dire need to be to active in ones community, but also the importance of preserving ones environment. Not only is learning to build and create works of art that are intertwined with the natural processes of nature important, but maintaining a more effiecnt lifestyle for ourselves is as well

With this said I will ARCHITECTUALLY…

horizon1.jpg

Expand my horizons where the boundaries of sky are not tangible in order to not set boundries, but set inspiration.

I will then LYRICALLY

scra.bmp

stand by my beliefs and the things that i believe in: conservation

AND then I will BODILY...

bodil.jpg

create and intertwine architecture in order to contrue our surroundings, our society and our environment.

" There is sufficiency in the world for man's NEED, but not for man's GREED. Mohandas K. Gandhi

"SUSTAINABILITY Today"
world.jpg

WORDS THAT WERE SPOKEN AND HEARD...

"Achieving sustainable development is perhaps one of the most difficult and one of the most pressing goals we face. It requires on the part of all of us commitment, action, partnerships and, sometimes, sacrifices of our traditional life patterns and personal interests".
~ Mostafa Tolba, Chairman of the Commission on Sustainable Development

"That's human nature. Nobody does anything until it's too late."
~ Michael Crichton

"There must be a better way to make the things we want, a way that doesn't spoil the sky, or the rain or the land".
~Sir Paul McCartney

For your knowledgeable pleasure...

DEFINITIONS
WATER: a fluid necessary for the life of most animals and plants
water.jpg
FACTS
-Millions of pounds of toxic chemicals, like lead, mercury and pesticides, pour into our waterways each year, contaminating wildlife, seafood and drinking water.
- Forty-five percent of our nation’s lakes and 39% of our rivers are too polluted to be completely safe for swimming or fishing.
- We are losing once pristine national treasures – the Everglades, Lake Superior, the Columbia River System and others – to toxic pollution, chemical spills, development, and damming or diversion of freshwater flows
.

LAND: the territory occupied by a nation
land.jpg
FACTS
-Livestock grazing has led to soil erosion, watershed destruction and ruin of wildlife habitat on millions of acres of out public lands. Every year taxpayers lose up to $100 million underwriting this harmful activity.
-Mining companies are allowed to buy our public lands for less than five dollars an acre – and they pay no royalties on the gold and other minerals they extract. This taxpayer giveaway, combined with the cost of massive environmental damage and clean-up, amounts to a billion dollars every year.
-Taxpayer subsidies for logging our great Alaskan rainforest have been averaging over $30 million annually in recent years.

ENERGY: the capacity of a physical system to do work
energy.jpg
FACTS
-The United States is responsible for almost 25% of the world’s total energy consumption. We use nearly one million gallons of oil every two minutes.
-Buildings using state-of-the-art energy efficiency technologies can cut their energy use by 60% or more.
-Increasing fuel economy standards for passenger vehicles over ten years to 45 miles per gallon would conserve 15 times more oil than the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would likely produce. By 2012, we’d be saving nearly 2 million barrels every day – more oil than we imported from Saudi Arabia last year.

AIR: a distinctive but intangible quality surrounding a person or thing
air.jpg
FACTS
-More than 100 million Americans live in urban areas where the air is officially classified by the EPA as unsafe to breathe.
-In many urban areas, children are exposed to high levels of air pollutants, increasing the risk of chronic lung disease, cell damage, asthma, and bronchitis.
-Dioxin and other persistent pollutants that are released into the air accumulate in waterways and wildlife, as well as in our food supply and our bodies. These poisons are known to cause cancer and reproductive disorders in human beings and other animals.

As you can see, maintaining a sustainable environment is an important issue in our society.
Focusing on understanding the root causes of unsustainable behavior in complex systems will help to restructure systems and shift mindsets that will help move human society toward sustainability.
One of the most difficult aspects of environmentally-responsible design is to find the most suitable materials and available products that help sustain the earth and human health. Until now, it has been difficult to find sources for suitable materials and products from local or regional sources.
Not only is sustainability important in the design aspect, but in all aspects of life. As you can see from my introduction that for every action there is an effect and with the help of new and improved ideas our world can become a better place for ourselves and for our furture.

And here's a little extra something to think about...

10 Simple Sustainable Transportation Tips

1. Trip chain more often. It's easy! Chances are, you're already doing it -- combining your errands into one trip. It helps you get things done and it helps reduce traffic congestion and air pollution. When you first start a car after it's been sitting for more than an hour, it pollutes up to five times more than when the engine's warm.
2. Take mass transit, share a ride, or car pool. Even if you do it just once or twice a week, you'll reduce traffic congestion and pollution, and save money. The average driver spends about 56 cents per mile including ownership and maintenance.
3. Have fun! Ride your bike. It's a great way to travel and it can help you and the air get into condition. Vehicles on the road create more than 25% of all air pollution nationwide.
4. Take things in stride. Walk or in-line skate instead of driving. They're easy ways to get exercise and they're easy on the air.
5. Care for your car. Regular maintenance and tune-ups, changing the oil, and checking tire inflation can improve gas mileage, extend your car's life, and increase its resale value. It can also reduce traffic congestion due to preventable breakdowns and it could reduce your car's emissions by more than half.
6. Get fuel when it's cool. Refueling during cooler periods of the day or in the evening can prevent gas fumes from heating up and creating ozone. And that can help reduce ozone alert days.
7. Don't top off the tank. It releases gas fumes into the air, which cancels the benefits of the pump's anti-pollution devices. So, stopping short of a full tank keeps gas off of you, is safer, and reduces pollution.
8. Telecommute. Work at home sometimes. You'll save time and money, and reduce emissions and traffic congestion.
9. Know before you go. If your area has a travel and transit information network, use it by calling, visiting the web site, or tuning into the cable station. Get travel and transit updates before you leave home and you won't get stuck in a jam.
10. Spread the word. If everyone took just a few of these simple, easy steps, it could make a big difference because it all adds up to clean air.

Blog II- Affordable Housing

Affordable housing here in the Twin Cities is an increasing issue as time passes. More and more people are having difficulties trying to pay their mortgages while struggling to maintain a decent life for their families. According to http://fhfund.org it is understood that more and more people are facing these very same issues everyday and that In the Twin Cities metro area, 171,000 or 46 percent of low-income households are considered cost-burdened. This is the simple fact that has been staring people in the face many years now. Something has to be done when more than 30% of a family’s income is put into housing.
How can a family afford the exceedingly high prices of homes and apartments in the cities when more than half of the jobs here in Minnesota pay less than 31,000 a year? This is evidently not nearly enough to rent of even buy a home here in the Twin Cities. It’s a serious issue that many organizations have paid attention to including The Family Housing Fund, Habitat for Humanity and many others who are non-profited organization who preserve and produce affordable homes for low to middle income families here in the Twin Cities. The Family Housing fund as a funder, raises money from organizations and uses the funds to make grants and loans toward the creation and preservation of affordable housing.
Although it may sounds easier said than done, it does take a lot of time and community involvement to makes things work. Many of the Organization depend greatly on volunteers throughout the community to help others. Which is another important reason why volunteering is SO very important in the community. Its a way to reach out and help others and know that they would do the same for you!

Blog 1, Architecture 1701

The topic of discussion on January 29th and January 31st was based on the creative works of Andy Goldsworthy and his interpretation of energy and its flow through nature and our landscape. As seen through his eyes, we were able to rediscover and understand the meaning of energy in life and in ourselves.

Goldsworthy makes it very lucid that his very own constructions interact with the environment through the flow of energy. For instance he states that nature itself can inspire his creative pieces, but at the same time can also destroy them. With this said I begin to understand how the very elements of our existence are intertwined with each other. Nature inspires art work and art work comes with no limitations. Goldsworthy also made it clear that we as humans have an impact on our environment. Whether a positive or negative impact it is know that for every action there is a reaction and for every reaction there’s another action.

The conservation of energy states that, in an isolated system, energy is neither created nor destroyed. This is very important to my understanding of a city landscape because the way we construe our environment can influence our lives and the future. Depending on our interpretation the flow of energy in city can be taken into many accounts. For instance, we were asked to investigate and document this idea of energy and its flow through the city. When taking into account the word “city I imagine all the things that surround me day-to-day. I say this because I realize that energy has no beginning or an end. Everything has an effect on everything else. For instance when we think of certain energy systems within our city, we can see that it’s an endless cycle.

When deciding on what would be the best way to depict my interpretation of energy I realized that no matter what picture I took energy was seen in it in one for or another. If you can’t see it, you can feel it.
