Assignment 5

I carried out a scamper brainstorming session in my notebook using products of dreidel and menorah for my sub-theme of Hanukkah! I watched a couple episodes of the Dr. Who to get me in a creative mindset prior to starting the activity.

Above, I forgot to label this idea, it is Candle Wax Forms!

Through completing my SCAMPER brainstorming session, I chose my favorite ideas to be:

S-Candle Wax Forms
C-Party Dreidel
A-Mood Ring Menorah
M-Symbol Extruded Texture Dreidel
P-Magic-Light Menorah
E-Clap-On Menorah
R-Sky Dancers-like Dreidel Launcher

I also really liked these three additional ideas: the dreidel that plays the dreidel song, playing the song with a tempo that aligns with spin frequency (song tempos spin frequency dreidel), the self extinguishing menorah that extinguishes when a child approaches for safety, and the prayer singing menorah.

Pictures of the above 10 ideas mentioned can be seen in my posted SCAMPER pages.

Following my SCAMPER brainstorming, I did a morphological analysis with a dreidel.

My morphological analysis inspired me to further explore grip ideas:

The three ideas I got from my morphological analysis are listed below:

Next, looking back at past brainstorming ideas, I already did alter a bunch into updated or new inspired ideas through the SCAMPER activity. I had these old ideas already in my head influencing my new ones. For example, the talking menorah that tells you the story of Hannukah is very similar to the prayer singing menorah. Also, the party dreidel is a combination of a lot of ideas: the light up dreidel that lights up as the dreidel spins, informative light dreidel that lights up a different color once landed according to certain side, music playing dreidel, and the talking dreidel that tells you what to do.

Then I sorted through all of my ideas and came up with my 10 most promising ones:

1. Candle Wax Forms (SCAMPER)

2. Party Dreidel that is also informative (SCAMPER influenced by group brainstorming)

3. Fiber Optic Dreidel Skirt (SCAMPER idea. My roommate, Rachel, joined in on the SCAMPER briefly and came up with this one!)

4. Self-Extinguishing menorah (influenced by past personal experience and reminded of idea through SCAMPER)

5. Audible menorah (combination of SCAMPER prayer singing menorah and previous group brainstorming sesh idea of Menorah that tells the story of Hanukkah)

6. Song Tempo Spin Frequency Dreidel (SCAMPER)

7. Magic Light Menorah (SCAMPER)

8. SkyDancers-like Dreidel Launcher (SCAMPER)

9. Mood Ring Menorah--pretty color changing, and know when it's hot for safety (SCAMPER idea)

10.Drei-Doodle (Group Brainstorming idea)

I already made the first prototype of this idea at Leonardo's Basement!

The bottom of the dreidel is a crayon. The tip broke off in my bag unfortunately. With the tip, however, the dreidel spun decently leaving a crayon trail pretty well. It would work a lot better if the dreidel was better constructed though so that the center of gravities were more balanced.

The dreidel was a great object to pursue for this assignment, I would not have approached it with this object in mind, and I think it was very effective! The ideas you came up with are original and creative, making the blog a very fun read :)
A couple of suggestions I would have would be: For your SCAMPER ideas, maybe sketch them on plain paper once you have the ideas down in your notebook. This could help the readability of the blog as you scroll down, and help the organization so it is easier to follow! I appreciate, however, how clean and well documented your later sketches are (the top ten you chose)! Along the same lines, I would also suggest redrawing your Morphological Analysis to make it a little easier to read in the scanned image.

Overall, I really like your ideas and your process is very well documented! I also greatly appreciated you adding a photo of your prototype from Leonardo's Basement, you clearly have thought through some of your ideas and are ready to start pursuing them!

First off it was a joy to read through your notes. your ideas are creative, wacky, funny, and cool. The bar stool idea to the aroma therapy idea were really great, and so was the LED glass menorah. It's enjoyable to see you develop ideas and I think you took a big advantage of scamper by coming up with so many. I like that your'e really pushing the menorah and dreidel to the modern age. Your'e adding cool new electronics that make for more playful and unique toys and decorations. Sometimes people like to take a step back from technology on the holidays but I think for the newer generations infusing those things with cool new tech will certainly keep younger people more engaged. Once again I loved reading through your thought process it gave me some good laughs. Also loved the dreidal with light up skirt!

Things to improve on:
Post your specific how might we problem statements at the top just so you remind the readers what in particular your'e aiming for. I mean I know it's Hanuka themed but reminding the readers of what specifically you are trying to do would make the blog easier to go through.

Personally I would give you leeway with the formatting because most of your blog was written in your notebook, but just keep in mind landscape orientations for future posts.

Wow! The documentation of your thought process for the scamper was amazing. I really appreciated being able to read through that and see what you were questioning and what arose from that. Maybe if you could have somehow highlighted your favorite from each somehow in the notes, it would have popped out a little more and not got so lost in pages.

Great drawings for your top 10 ideas. Good to see some drawing skills being put to use. The only thing I can see you changing is taking out some of the words. The pictures do a lot the description, so try to cut back to things that are only truly essential, on the picture at least.

Great job overall, I enjoyed reading.

I love the sheer number of ideas you generated. You didn't just write them down, but you drew nearly all of them! That is really great to see. I was scrolling through them wondering what letter of scamper I was on, and then I got to C... Very impressive. One thing I might suggest is that with so many images, it could be good to make use of larger or emboldened text as page breaks, because after looking at the large images, a tiny line of text separating two sections could easily be overlooked.

Your final drawings were very nice and exceptionally clear. You had nice, thick lines, and fantastic contrast. In the future it might be a good idea to stick a plain white sheet of paper between the pages of your design notebook before scanning or photographing it so the drawings from the next page don't show through.
