NHTSA Released 2008 FARS Data

NHTSA has released the 2008 FARS Data. There were only 720 fatalities in work zones in 2008 (comprised of drivers, pedestrians and workers). The National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse has added work zone fatalities info. to our site. Let's work towards ZERO!

Gravel Road Video for Download

Now available for download, Minnesota LTAP's instructional DVD "Gravel Road Maintenance:Meeting the Challenge" may be found at http://www.mnltap.umn.edu/Publications/Videos/GravelRoadMaintenance/index.html

The videos toolkit provides instruction on proper gravel road maintenance techniques, either as a stand-alone tutorial or as an instructor's tool to introduce the topics. The toolkit consists of a six-part DVD and two PDF instructional resources.

Shoreview experiment may eliminate storm drains

Shoreview Public Works Director Mark Maloney says that pervious concrete allows water to flow through, preventing runoff and eliminating the need for storm sewers. ... The Minnesota Department of Transportation, working with the Aggregate Ready Mix Association, began studying pervious concrete in 2005 on a driveway, sidewalk and road test strips at its MnROAD research center at Albertville.

Jennings Randolph Fellowship

APWA announcement: 2009 call for applications for the Jennings Randolph Fellowships

The Fellowship supports participation at a public works conference of one of our international partners and a public works study tour in that country. APWA is currently accepting proposals for Australia, Mexico, or the Slovak and Czech Republics. The Fellowship generally covers the cost of airfare. Applications are due to Kaye Sullivan, APWA Deputy Executive Director, by November 14, 2008. New FHWA Sign Retroreflectivity Rule, Jan. 22

The FHWA Office of Safety advised all LTAP Centers that the Final Rule for maintained sign retroreflectivity was published in the Federal Register on Friday December 21, 2007. It will go into effect on January 22, 2008.

The FHWA Visibility Web site includes the text of the rule, the changes to the MUTCD text, a brochure that explains the changes, and other related items. Go to www.fhwa.dot.gov/retro.

The 4-page brochure is in the process of being printed. Minnesota LTAP will be receiving copies for distribution to our customers.

"Snow Business" article on salt usage

Connie Fortin alerted us to the publication of her article in Snow Business, the publication of the Snow and Ice Management Association. It features the "Winter Parking Lot and Sidewalk Maintenance Manual," which was sponsored by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA).
