Hello Raza!
As the end of the semester is approaching, La Raza provides some fun events to attend. Karaoke Night is this FRIDAY from 6 - 8 pm. Remember that if you need peaceful place to study or take a nap stop by La Raza SCC, Coffman 211. Study days are on Tuesdays from 11am to 2 pm - snacks provided.
Below you will find some tips for stress management. As the end of the semester is approaching, and thus finals are around the corner we must stay focused.
Tips for Stress Management:
* Prioritize your tasks into "essential," "important," and "trivial." Follow that order for completing task. Consider dropping all the "trivials." Take one thing at a time.
* Take care of your body. Eat well, sleep enough, exercise regularly, and ... breathe.
* Recognize stress signals. When you feel stress setting in, observe your body and learn where it hits (what happens first?... tension in your neck or back, headache, frustrated more easily, less motivated?) The earlier you can recognize stress signals, the easier it is to change your behavior and stop the progression of the stress.
Tips for Coping with Stress:
* Get acquainted with happy, successful people.
* Meditate daily.
* Make your environment comfortable.
* Set goals realistically.
* Ask for help in a straightforward way.
* Compromise occasionally.
* Redefine your priorities.
Sincerely,
La Raza's Historian
2011-2012
PS: Remember to look at the attachments, they are full of opportunities for you! <3

Looking for a way to Volunteer with youth in the Latino community? Volunteer to be a small group leader on May 11th for the Youth Peace and Leadership Conference!
Each year, La Oportunidad helps to put together the Latino Youth Peace and Leadership Conference. The conference, which is planned by a group of Latino high school aged students, focuses on the prevalent issues faced by Latino youth in their communities, and discusses ways to overcome them. This year's conference is themed "Growing Healthy Relationships Juntos" which addresses the struggles and difficulties of maintaining healthy relationships with family members, friends, dating relationships for Latino youth. It also addresses powerful sub-themes such as dating violence, gender roles, and cyber relationships. One part of the conference will include small group time for the middle school and high school students to discuss these topics on a personal level.
These groups will be led by an adult facilitator that can help guide these discussions.
We are contacting Latino student groups from local colleges and universities because we believe that members from these groups would be great role models for the youth attending this conference.
We are looking for 35 volunteers to help lead the small groups during the conference. Previous youth work experience and Spanish speaking ability is preferred. The conference will be held on Friday, May 11th, 2012 from 8:30am to 3:00pm. A training day before the conference will be scheduled to help prepare the volunteers for the conference.
Contact me at alisone@oportunidad.org for more information. Please forward this information to anyone else that may be interested.
