SMSC Endowed Scholarship Recipients Announced

Prior Lake, MN - The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community today announced 31 new recipients of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Endowed Scholarship for the 2011-2012 school year. This is the third group of students to receive the scholarship at the University of Minnesota. Nineteen of the first two groups of 29 students will continue to receive the scholarships they were originally awarded for the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 school years; two students have graduated thus far. Continuation of the scholarships is based on grades and financial need.

"In today's society, an education is essential, but most especially for our Indian people. We need Indian doctors and dentists, lawyers and engineers. We need Indian teachers and counselors, managers and builders, and journalists. We need to educate our young people to be prepared to better meet the opportunities that will be available to them and the challenges they will face. We need our young people to protect our tribal sovereignty, and we need them to return to our tribal communities to work to help Indian people," said SMSC Chairman Stanley R. Crooks.

The SMSC Endowed Scholarship was established in 2008 through a $2.5 million gift from the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community into an endowment fund which earns interest which the U of M matches to provide scholarships for American Indian students.

The SMSC scholarship program is designed to recruit and retain talented American Indian students with demonstrated financial need to the University of Minnesota. The SMSC scholarship program is administered by the University's Office for Equity and Diversity. To date, 60 students have received the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Endowed Scholarship.

The primary goal of the SMSC scholarship program is to support incoming University of Minnesota freshmen and transfer students with demonstrated financial need. A smaller number of scholarships may also be awarded to newly-admitted graduate and professional students in specific disciplines. For undergraduates, scholarships are renewable for up to four years or until graduation (whichever comes first) contingent upon academic performance. For graduate and professional students, the length of funding is contingent upon academic performance, the school of enrollment, and degree program and will be determined on a case-by-case basis.

The 31 scholarship recipients come from across the Midwest and from a number of different tribes. They come from Arizona, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Illinois, South Dakota, and North Dakota. Fifteen of the students are from Minnesota. Students previously awarded the SMSC Endowed Scholarships come from as far as New York, Utah, Oklahoma, and Colorado. Previous recipients have majors as diverse as Forensic Science to Music to Biochemistry to Dentistry.

For each cycle applications materials received by March 1 are given preference. The final deadline is September 1. For more information go to http://www.shakopeedakota.org/scholarships.html.

...

This press release and other information may be downloaded from the SMSC website at www.shakopeedakota.org.

it's important to stay abreast of the information our senior officers share with the campus community. Below is the 'welcome' letter from our Provost. It's a good read. I read it and as a new employee feel good about my decision to join the UMN family. I hope you read it and feel as if your decision to join the Fall class, return for another year as a student, faculty or staff member or visitor was the right one. We have a lot going for us at our University. Keep informed and it just gets better and better. Happy reading!

Provost's Academic Update
Welcome to a new academic year, one filled with opportunity and the promise of even greater excellence, building on so many of our recent academic achievements:

    * The academic profile of our entering class is the strongest the University has ever seen, with 40,000 applicants competing for 5,300 seats in the freshman class.
* Two of our graduate students received Rhodes Scholarships this past year.
* Last spring, Distinguished McKnight University Professor Marla Spivak was awarded a highly prestigious MacArthur Foundation "genius grant."
* Sponsored funding for research reached an all-time high in FY2010 of $823 million.
* Last year the University and the United Nations' Food and Agricultural Organization formed a historic collaboration to address issues surrounding the global food supply and sustainability.
* The Science Teaching and Student Services building, with its state-of-the-art classrooms and advising space, opened last year to great acclaim, and the Frank Gehry addition to the magnificent Weisman Art Museum opens October 1st.

The recession continues, but so does the University's resolve to meet the resulting financial challenge with aggressive and creative efforts to cut costs, increase efficiency, and find new revenue sources. Importantly, the current economy should not detract from the University's focus on excellence. There is a direct link between the value (for a lifetime) of a University of Minnesota degree and the reputation of the University. In turn, the University's reputation depends on its quality. And, so too, the state of Minnesota's economy and quality of life are linked inextricably to the University's productivity and impact.

The University's commitment to excellence is unwavering. Equally unwavering is our commitment to: (1) financial access and affordability; and (2) access to educational excellence. Our promise of access to excellence to admitted students is designed to promote timely graduation and to open the doors of opportunity to all of those who have earned a University of Minnesota degree. Our students should have every opportunity to compete after graduation with the best and brightest anywhere.

Our entire community should share the goal of enhancing excellence. If we do, our students--the next generation of leaders--and the quality of life in Minnesota will benefit. The tradeoffs are clear. The value of a degree from the University must continue to be and to be seen by employers and others as of the highest quality. That is our commitment.

Welcome back again. Have a great semester.

Best wishes,

E. Thomas Sullivan
Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
Julius E. Davis Chair in Law

This message was approved by the Senior Vice President and Provost of the University of Minnesota and sent to all Twin Cities students, faculty, and staff.
