Art Shanty Call for Entries!

Art Shanty Projects is once again looking for artists willing to make art for 5 weeks this winter and live in a little hut. The event has generated some major press in the past and looks rather entertaining. Entry proposals are due by October 5.

Minutes for 9/18/07

Art Guild still needs to be officially registered. E-mails will be sent.

Art Guild is creating another zine. Themes discussed were Halloween, living environment (dorm, apartment, etc) and "that crazy radio guy." We will each be creating a 5.5" x 8.5" b+w page about "that guy" to photocopy in a limited edition of 50 as promotional pieces for Art Guild. Submission deadline is October 15.

We will be making crafts for a fundraising event sometime in October. We might be having the sale in front of the Tweed if fundraising is no longer allowed in front of the Kirby Bookstore.

Meeting posters are being designed for next week. The required information is as follows:
Art Guild
Meets every Tuesday @ 4pm in the Tweed Museum
E-mail umd.artguild@gmail.com or visit http://www.mnartists.org/art_guild for more information.

You can edit the wording, but all of that content needs to be somehow involved.

We are planning a trip to Minneapolis. Sometime. Need to look into getting free admission.

We might have a zine release party following the completion of the zine.

Call for Art: Altered Books at the Minneapolis Public Library

Minneapolis Public Library announces a statewide call for post-secondary student artists enrolled in a Minnesota college or university as of October 1, 2007 to submit digital images of altered books for a juried exhibition January-March 2008 in a locked display case in the entrance hall of Minneapolis Central Library. The student exhibit will be juried by Chip Schilling, Indulgence Press. Deadline: October 17

The exhibition will be part of a citywide series of workshops, exhibitions and programs capped by the annual convention of the Public Library Association in Minneapolis, March 25-29, 2008. Media releases, electronic and printed materials will direct visitors to all exhibition venues.

Altered Books Definition: According to the International Society of Book Artists, an altered book is any book, old or new, that has been recycled by creative means into a work of art. An altered book can be rebound, painted, cut, burned, folded, added to, collaged in, gold-leafed, rubber stamped, drilled or otherwise adorned.

Download complete entry details for more information.

HOST

UMD Professor David Bowen is included in this exhibition. It might make a fun weekend trip to see. The Soap Factory is also an excellent venue to get work shown at as an emerging and even student artist.

The Soap Factory proudly Presents Host
Curated By Elizabeth M. Grady

September 8 - October 21, 2007

Opening Saturday September 8th 7-11 pm

Exhibiting Artists:

Alejandro Almanza Pereda, William R. Bergman, China Blue, David Bowen, Tracey Goodman, Erik Shorrock Guzman, Wade Kavanaugh, José Enrique Krapp, Caitlyn Masley, Panayiotis Michael, Derick Melander, Jeffrey Morrison, Jason Peters, Meridith Pingree, Jenny Polak, David Politzer and Carol Salmanson

At the intersection between the private and public spheres we experience social and emotional tensions. Venturing into shared spaces, like the remarkable building and site of The Soap Factory, we may follow or resist pre-set paradigms of speech and behavior. The motion, interactivity, and participatory nature of the work in Host refers metaphorically to such daily choices, encouraging a heightened awareness of the impact of one's actions on broader patterns of economic, political and societal relations. The installations explore that impact by drawing on the energy of the galleries and their occupants in the form of movement, light, and sound. Often addressing current events or ongoing social conundrums - like immigration or global warming - the artists create works that are often paradoxically hopeful, as they offer us spaces for contemplation and tools for coping, balancing an awareness of risk and a need for refuge. However, the art is far from limited by a single political perspective or framework, and many of the works point humorously or pensively toward the idiosyncrasies and foibles of our human condition. In this way the exhibition explores universal conflicts between the self and society, between individual urges and accommodation to the demands of living in the outside world.

Art Attack: A Subversive Art Event

This is a great chance to show some work for free (Art Guild: It's just another line on your resume).

Art Attack: A Subversive Art Event
Thursday, September 20, 2007
DAI Lincoln Center
2229 W. 2nd St.
5-7 pm
FREE

Art Attack is a spontaneous exhibition targeted at the young underground and outsider artists of the area. Artists are invited to bring a single piece of art to install or present in or around the Lincoln Center Gallery. All visual and alternative art mediums such as fashion and performance art are encouraged. Musicians and poets are also welcome. There are no restrictions to size or content, we only ask that the property of the DAI is not damaged or defaced in any way. Creative spontaneity is the goal of this event.

A small reception will be provided by the Duluth Art Institute. Artists and event-goers are also welcome to bring potluck food to share. Bring your favorite food art!

The event will be promoted primarily through alternative information vehicles such as blogs, email, flyers at alternative gathering places, and ads in local zines. Conceptually more related to “tagging” than to the salubrious atmosphere of the usual DAI opening, Art Attack will also runs the risk of being even more fun!

Intermedia Arts presents
The 2008 SASE/JEROME Grants for Emerging MN Writers
Deadline to Apply: September 15, 2007

and

The 2008 VERVE GRANTS for Emerging MN Spoken Word Poets
Deadline to Apply: November 2, 2007

Calling all Minnesota writers and spoken word poets! Applications are now available for the 2008 SASE/Jerome and VERVE Grants, which award grants of up to $5,000 to emerging Minnesota writers, and up to $3,000 to emerging Minnesota spoken word poets. An emerging artist is defined a writer whose work demonstrates a sustained level of accomplishment and commitment, but who has not yet received recognition/acknowledgement as an established creator from fellow writers and/or other arts professionals.

The purpose of this program is to make grants to support the creation and production of new artistic works by emerging Minnesota writers and spoken word poets, and to contribute to the professional advancement of those artists.

Our goal is to provide financial assistance, professional encouragement, and recognition to a culturally and socio-economically diverse group of literary artists, in an effort to strengthen and support Minnesota's literary community.

Applications and complete program information can be downloaded from our website: www.intermediaarts.org. Contact us at (612) 871-4444 or info@intermediaarts.org for more information! This program is made possible by the Jerome Foundation.

Art Guild

The UMD Art Guild is the only cross-collegiate and cross-disciplinary arts organization on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth. Art Guild provides an outlet for students to go to galleries, create art, show art, critique the work of peers, and educate themselves about the contemporary art world and what students are doing today. Art Guild makes annual trips to Minneapolis and Chicago for gallery hops and educational and cultural enrichment.

This blog will highlight opportunities for student artists in Duluth, Art Guild events, and it will point to cool shit. Like Fecal Face.
